Hi all,
On my 89 nc30 my shock has no pre loader just a pipe from the bottom of the shock going to atmosphere.
Is the is normal and age specific or did the preloader option come in at a different time?
The parts catalogue shows a preloader so im a little in the dark

The preload is on all the shocks - it is a collar around the top of the spring.
You have a 1989 "K" model shock - this non remote reservoir model was on the 1989 bikes only.
The canister you are missing is a remote reservoir for the shock to have more oil and less susceptibility to fade.
One of our members, Alex Whitham, is selling a freshly rebuilt later model shock..bargain.

Nice one thank you. If it was on the 89 model ill keep it just rather than change as its an 89 bike, although i will have a look.
Thanks for correcting me on the preloader, this is what night shift does to you :)

it is the same shock - just with a remote res - keeping the original shock, even for authenticity reasons is a poor idea if you are going to ride the bike - they are shit. Get very hot adn the damping fades to nowt.
Even getting one rebuilt with fresh oil - imagine what the oil in it now is like - is a good call, but putting good money into a poor solution.
Most bikes are not as per std 1989 spec these days - mine is a 1989...and it has later model forks and carb settings etc..

I'm a little confused by the comment about a pipe coming from the bottom of the shock that just vents..... is that actually right?

I will double check tomorrow but im sure thats the situation, ill take a pic when i get back ome tomorrow.
I had no idea the shock was so poor having never ridden one so ill have a look at a replacement.
Thank you for pointing that out for me, as its stripped i would have been annoyed after a rebuild to strip it again

managed to nip out to the garage and take a few snaps
The first one shows the pipe coming from the underside of the shock, the second is just a generic shot of the shock.
As you can see its stripped ready for a transplant. Im hoping that pipe supposed to be venting

Yes, that is just a vent pipe/drain.
Sorry - thought you were on about the remote reservoir section

Aha.... found a pic of another early NC30 shock.... pipe is nothing unusual, although I can't work out what it is for... lol is it just a drain?

When I stripped mine it looks like it is to drain any water that may collect in the bottom bowl...
