Good Evening,

I have recently purchased a CBR400RR-L 1990 model. I started her up today and noticed on tick over there is a slight clicking noise? I cant pinpoint the exact area where its coming from but around the rad/front of engine seems to be the area?

Being my first bike my technical knowledge isn't great & not having passed my test yet I cannot see if the noise goes after a short ride!

If you have any suggestions that would be great :)

Fuel pump makes a ticking when empty of fuel, is the fuel tap on? It will run for a long time on tickover with no fuel flowing. Carb bowls hold a bit of fuel.

Exhaust leaking at exhaust connection to engine! Start engine, feel for leak, stop when too hot, leave to cool, start again. Took me a week to find mine.

Left it blowing as cant be arsed to fix. Can only be heard on tickover.

Please can you confirm the fuel tap positions? I thought it was:

Anti clockwise fully: ON
clockwise fully: Reserve
Middle: Off

I may have had it round the wrong way earlier, Will have to try it again tomorrow.

I dont know off the top of my head.

Think down is on - level is off - up is reserve.

If the engine is running turn the tap and the ticking will stop in 2-3 secs. If thats the fault!

Open the fuel cap in case there is a fuel lock stopping the fuel from flowing.

If it runs for more than 10-20mins its not the fuel pump, take it for a ride, but dont go far!

I would go for the exhaust outlets first. Remove side panels it will be easier to locate also get a friend to cap the exhaust end with a rag for short bursts. It will make it easier to locate if you dont have a burbling noise going on at the other end. If you find a leak and it liiks like its the exhaust header clamps just nip it up carefully but dont tighten it down bending the clamps, just enough to keep it tightened. If that dont work maybe some new crush washers are the best option.

Long part of the lever down for on. Long part up for reserve. Inline with crossbar off.

Mine does exactly the same thing. It clears around 4k rpm and the bike runs very lumpy if you try and set off below that. I assumed it was just normal with these engines revving quite high normally. Let me know if you have any luck solving it!

I'll try the fuel tap tomorrow eve and failing that the exhaust header etc on the weekend. Pretty sure its nothing but just one of those things which annoys you!

Dont see it being anything to do with the fuel tap, you say the noise is coming from the front near the rad.
To me it sounds like you exhaust blowing so maybe some new exhaust gaskets will sort it out.
If it was fuel pump it would be coming from the back of the engine.

Trick to do put some talk powder onto the exhaust outlets and start it up watch to see if the talk puffs off lol will show if its blowing or not, done this before myself works a treat.

Cheers for that! Will give it a try later or over the weekend.

when I fired it up yesterday and it made 2 bigger spitting sounds then started the clicking. It's strange tho cos the sound sounds more like an electrical problem but everything seems fine! To be it kinda sounds like the sound where a fuse is getting connected and disconnected where it clicks... Could be way wrong tho
