Decided to overhaul my suspension slightly, and am soon to order a Hagon monoshock. However I'm struggling to find specifics on what size fork springs I need to stiffen up the front end.

M & P's has Hagon springs for sale here - http://www.mandp.co.uk/productinfo/5271 ... ings/Hagon, but there's no option for the nc24, and I'm pretty sure the nc30 is a different fork size. Anybody know what I should be getting?

Edit: I've come across http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hyperpro-Prog ... 063wt_1305 but it seems a bit expensive. Will these do a noticeably better job than Hagon springs?

Nitron rear shocks aren't much more money than Hagon but are way cooler. I'm sure they'll do one for a 24 if you ask nicely, and maybe send them your old one?

Springs and new oil will cost you ITRO £120 to do. The old springs are dead money. How much would it cost to swap out the front for something later and better? You can always sell straight forks so take that off the total, the springs in the new forks will probably be enough and not need doing. Maybe someone here knows if your wheel is compatible with a later front end? I know eg. on a 29 if you found a pair of 96-7 900RR forks you'd be able to use your wheel and discs, and get bolt-on 3 way adjustable beefy forks with strong 4-pot brake options including 929/954 brakes.

The 24 has a funny size front tyre, might be handy to change to a modern front with 17" wheel anyway? The discs are 296mm like the rest of the nc's, so you might find a later nc front end a good option? 296 discs also are used on that blade front

That HyperPro stuff is a kit including oil, which you will want to do at the same time as the springs. Consider that when comparing prices! I say new fork springs are new fork springs and compared to your OE stuff will kick ass whatever you get. Unless you're used to modern sports bikes you won't notice the difference of one brand to the next, even then I couldn't tell you which of your options had better performance on your bike, you might even find the springs to be from the same factory if you could check it.

Front NC24 discs are 276mm also different bolt pattern so they wont fit on a later 17" wheel.

Stock forks are 37mm also, unlike the 41mm of the NC30 / CBR400 etc.

Problem with the 30 setup is the front forks are way too short.

Last I looked into it before I gave up was

NC30 lower fork legs / NC30 wheel and discs / CBR400 upper stantions, yokes from something 41mm made to fit with NC30 brakes / master cylinder / longer hoses might be about the right length if you can get it all to fit, will also give you the 4 piston calipers.

However, due to the fact the apart from overpriced dreamers on ebay the NC24 fetches pennies and the time / cost involed it is easier to buy an NC30. Better frame and comes with all the stuff youll be putting on the 24 anyway.

Not to mention it will be cheaper in the long run, worth more and there is more options avaiable.

That being said it is your own bike and you can do what you want so my ideas are above. But for the time, effort and money you might be btter off just keeping the bike as stock, with properly sorted out standard suspension and eventually selling it and getting something else.

Its like buying an old beetle and trying to turn it into a modern one, theres a point where the cost is just too much for what it becomes.

True enough, but if he likes his '24 and wants to put some money into it, he'd might as well improve it.

If you respring the 24 forks then you're still stuck with skinny forks, a 16" wheel and old fashioned brakes.

No idea about length, but these forks use the same head bearing sizes, take the excellent gold nissin brakes and a 17" wheel. All depends on what one wants to do with the bike, doesn't it?

120/60-17 is about the same diameter as 100/90-16 so no issues with radiator clearance or ride height. Most bikes also have the clip ons under the yokes, so ideally you'd have to find forks from one with clip ons above the yokes to clear the fairings. On the other hand, the nc24 clip ons above the yoke are quite low, below yoke clip ons with a little bit of rise (like CBR900) would do the same job more or less, depending on available fairing clearance.

Maybe CBR600F4i for example? Clip ons above the yoke, 17" wheel, great brakes.

It's all just ideas, but if he's putting £300 into a shock maybe he's up for a putting a few quid in to the front too.

You can fit a complete Jellymould CBR600 or early 2000s CBR600RR front end. All you need to do is swap the stem over on the yokes. The forks are slightly longer so they will need to stick through above the top yoke by about 3/4" IIRC. You may also need to alter the steering stops. I can't remember all the exact dimensions, it's a while since I looked into it

I don't think I'd bother with jellymould myself? Or is that as that also had 276mm discs, maybe you could keep the wheel? Still, it's not going to be much more modern nor really better?

I appreciate the suggestions, but as Neo said - it's just an nc24. I don't think it's worth the time or money getting different forks for it when I can just put new springs in and have a nice lazy upgrade (I saw another thread on here that actually said this was the one of the best upgrades you can do for the bike since they're so soft as stock). Changing the monoshock was also just because it's fairly rusty from old age.

It's my baby, and I'll give it a wee bit TLC without going over the top :)

Fair play! If it's anything like my XJ600S was, new Hagon springs and oil (don't second guess, use their recommendation) really really sorted the front end out.

I have a Hagon rear shock on my NC24 and I also have Maxton fork springs..With Maxton you will have to measure the length of your existing fork springs and spacers and tell them how much you weigh

These suspension upgrades made a big difference
