Hi there folks, this whole forum thing is new to me so be gente plz lol.
recently (2 days ago!) I passed my test (YAY!!! ) and acquired (prezzie from parental unit) a cbr 400 nc23 which is a wee bit tatty but still MY pride & joy.

it does however have issues...
.first is the fan has had a manual switch fitted which I hate with a passion and would really appreciate every1's advice on how to go about ditchin it and solving the underlying issues which made the previous owner view this as a sound idea?

.second is starting. it doesn't start off the buuton but eventually off bumping and once running it sounds like a bag ov hammers! coughin & spluttering.

.third is fuel pump makes awful noise upon turning ignition on until fuel tap is turned on...is this normal?

thanx guys (and gals?) for any advice given.

Fuel pump shouldn't be noisy.

If I were you I'd take it back to grass roots, not only will you sort the bike but you will also get to know its nuts and bolts.

Strip the tank, airbox, carbs off etc, clean and replace, new plugs and filters that should sort out the bad runni g issues.

The fan switch can be sorted easily once you hav a look at the wiring diagram in the Haynes.

Oh and congrats on passing your test.

Just to add make sure your battery and rectifier are good. The root of many issues especially to new owners.

Stop doing 1/2 a job if you are going to service it do it properly.

These bikes need TLC they are at least 20 years old.....

has the bike been laid up for any sort of time. I had problems my NC23 after a winter lay up. Gave it a good service, all the regular bits. It became very difficult to start from cold, where as before no problem.
I drained the carbs by running them dry, removed then from the bike for a clean up. On carrying them to the workbench, 'petrol' poured out, this turned out to be petrol, drianed the fuel tank and found that most of my reserve capacity was water!!
Cleaned it all up and no running or starting problems

Sorry I meant it turned out that the carbs were holding water, as well as the lower leve of the tank
