Ignition Barrel / Keys

I managed to snap my key over the weekend, right at the base of the teeth. Its the only key that came with the bike so I'm a bit stuck - can't even take the bike to the shop as the steering lock is on.

I know I can get hold of a new set of locks from China for cheap, but the lead time is a bit extreme. What are my other options?

I'm off to the key cutters today as hopefully I will be able to at least take off the steering lock. Does the NC30 have coded keys? My Haynes manual doesn't seem to mention anything about the ignition barrel let alone how to remove it.

FWIW the bike has been running sweet for an entire month of commuting bar the initial battery woes- even in this monsoon season!

I recently snapped my key in a BMW R100 steering lock barrel, flush with the top, was the only one I had also.

I managed to get it out (eventually - with much buggering about and cursing!) with fine needle nose pliers & my local locksmith cut me a new one from the 2 parts - they can clamp them together on the cutter usually - failing that I was prepared to braise the 2 parts together.

If you can't get it out with fine pliers you could try bonding something to it to pull it out - maybe superglue gel? Carefully obviously ;)

be careful if you order one from hong kong, i did this recently, the quality was awful and the wiring was about 12" too short and the plug connector on the end didnt fit, and it was listed specifically for an nc30!. i ended up binning it.. i managed to get a good quality pattern one from the uk which is an exact replica of the o.e item, cost just over £30, if you decide to go down that route, let me know and ill give you the details of where i got mine.

If it is the original Honda key there will be the code stamped on the key, the start of the blade.

I.e C16.

Honda can cut you a key from that.

Any decent key cutters (not one of the chain stores) should be able to cut you a key.

Can you get the key out the lock with some tweezers or pliers? If not you'll have to take the ignition lock off (can't remember if you can remove it with steering lock on though...) and get them to see it.

I've had many keys recut from pieces of snapped ones.

Cheers guys.

I do have both parts of the key and got an in dependant shop to cut me one. The original does have a code stamped on it, but the guy put it in a machine and said it was not emitting any electronic codes.

The new key works fine on the seat and tank cap but I have not been able to turn it in the barrel. The barrel is a little broken I think as its how I broke the original.

I will give it another go tonight as the floods last night meant I had to stay inside! Cheers for the info on the Chinese parts, I was a bit wary. If anyone can give me any info on uk based replacements I would be grateful.

this was the one i purchased from the uk, yes its a pattern part, but looks identical to the original from the top. really good quality. just make sure yours is the 3 wire version and it will do the job a treat. hope this helps.

Ah.

Your confusing codes a little here..

New keys have a chip inside them too (like the new honds HISS security) the NC30 doesn't have that, but thats a different type of code.

Your code cut on the key is the KEY cut code. If you give this number to Honda they can supply you with exact same key as your original :)

These should be able to cut the key, give them a ring and they'll post one out for you.

Aye I know about the different codes from the post above, I was explaining that I can indeed order one from Honda as the stamped code is visible, and I would not be limited by a 3rd party-cut key as the original does not have a transponder. Thanks for the link to order a new key though, I will get right onto that one! ;)

I will try the route of getting a replacement key from Honda, and if the barrel is still causing me problems I will give a new barrel a go and see how annoying it is to carry around 4 keys - 2 for the bike and 2 for the security locks. :|
