Leaking reserve sensor

Post by Mike Shelby »

Hi -
I've changed fuel tanks on a 3tj as the old one was too rusty inside and have had to put the reserve sensor from the old tank into the new one - it has a little rubber gasket in it but it leaks even tho it's as tight as it'll go - do I need to use a gasket sealer and can anyone recommend one that will stop it leaking or do I need to get a new rubber seal?

Also something that's baffling me - I used to own this bike about 7/8 years ago and it started normally back then, how they should - since I've bought it back again it won't start unless the clutch is in and the sidestand up? Bit of a pain with this as if I want to keep the bike running but leave it on the stand then it cuts out?!!
It also now has no Neutral light and it's not the bulb - could that be due to the above too?

I can't ask the guy I sold it to originally what he's done as he was involved in a car accident (only about 6 months after I sold him it) and is still in hospital severley brain damaged to this day :(

Any advice much appreciated - ta

Sounds like the neutral sensor - it's an electric switch and should be relatively easy to sort out. I think it's under the sprocket cover below the sprocket and above gearchange ... have a look at the picture. Lay the bike over to the right there's probably oil behind it. Clean the are thoughly before you open it up. You might be lucky and find it's a wire off.

Yes I'd fit a new rubber to the sender. I don't know the shape of it it could be common to another part (fuel tap maybe) in which case look on the Bay or Wemoto

Thanks for that Boris - picking up a seal from Webbs at Lincoln today along with some fibre washers so hopefully that'll sort the leak out. Thanks for you advice on the neutral sensor - I'll have a look at it over the weekend ;)
