Hi,
I removed the engine from my Nc30 but i left the front sprocket on. I thought that i would be able to get it off by getting a ratched on the timing bolt on the clutch side and and undoing the front sprocket bolt with a breaker bar. But when i applied a good bit of force, the front sprocket turned with a horrible clicking noise. Now im worried incase ive buggered something internal. What u think??

Maybe the slipper clutch slipped.

Some kind of buzz gun, impact driver or similar. Proper tools!

If it wa the slipper clutch slipping then i take it that wouldnt be a big deal. Its just when it turned it felt like something turning on a spline... which prob wouldnt be good. Yeah I know its going to be a nightmare to get off. I was thinking just waiting until the engine back in the frame and the chain fitted and getting it off that way.

If you can wait till its back in the frame do that but if you can ive done it in the past with a soft ish piece of wood jammed in it to stop it spinning then get the buzz gun on it, i dont think id try it without a buzz gun.

If you were using the starter clutch bolt (timing bolt) to stop the engine turning, wouldn't you be unwinding this bolt when you tried to unwind the sprocket nut?

I didnt think of that Thats why im worried now because i rushed in without thinking about it properly. Is the best way to torque the starter clutch bolt to put it in sixth then hold the back brake on while torquing? I dont have access to a buzz gun just now so prob better to wait until the bike in frame eh? I do have an impact driver though.

If the starter clutch bolt has unwound, I cannot see that anything will have been damage. If you are removing the clutch cover, you can insert a piece of soft metal (a coin) in between the clutch and primary drive gears to lock the crankshaft while torquing the bolt. Same method might undo the sprocket nut. Otherwise as you have suggested, wait until the engine is back in the frame.

I just used a rag between the gears to lock the crank and torque up those bolts out of the frame
