Speedometer Problem

The needle on the speedo recently came off the rvf while going along. Have taken the clocks apart and refitted the needle but the speedo is now out by about 10mph. Going 30mph it is reading 40. The dial is in mph, so i guess it's been replaced in the past. Is there a certain place where the needle must rest or a measurement pass the needle stop that would give me a more accurate reading. Have read on other posts that when replacing the dial you must lift the needle over the stop and make a note of the distance it rests from the pin. Hope that makes sense.
