Personally I would never try to jump a motorcycle battery with a car battery. The cranking amps can be too much for the M/C battery to handle.

replace the battery and reg/rec! not as expensive as you think.
as mentioned. dont jump any bike off a car/van/truck battery!
i had to push start my bike for 2 weeks, after the 1st week i got used to it. certainly got me fitter!

It's "at your own risk" for sure. Although I had an AA man jump my 6v Honda C90 from a 12v jump pack and it seemed ok?! :D

yea thats right it does not pose any risk unless the car battery is flat and then it might try to draw too many amps from the bike genny. The other considerstion is that you should never crank the engine over for prolonged periods that will damage the starter and will also put the wiring under strain.

There are fuses on the starter for a good reason they will protect the wiring if any faults arise. Please check that all fuses are actually fuses and not a bolt that a previous owner has temprarily fitted and forgot about.

The other option is to just connect the jump lead and run the car engine and leave it for 10/15 mins and the cars alternator will have charged the bike battery.

As mentioned above when i have been working or track bikes i also have had just a liesure battery that i use for that purpose only works fine.

Slightly different situation, but similar implications. I have to leave my NC29(N) garaged for 2 months while I am abroad and then ride it for 2 months. Before I leave the UK I always remove the battery, and then give it a charge prior to refitting. After standing for 2 months the bike does take a a few minutes to start. So, in order not to hammer the bike battery, I always power the first start with a 12 volt/31 amp/hour car battery. Once the engine has warmed up, I refit the bike battery and, so far, all has been well. Although my bike battery is not in the circuit when the car battery is connected, this thread has raised a question in my mind about the possible damage I might be doing to other electrical components by using a 31 amp/hour source rather than a 6 amp/hour one for starting. Will appreciate any knowledgeable comments.

fit the bike battery and then jump it, running with just the car battery will give your charging system a bit of a shock as it tries in vain to charge it.

i think ..
