short introduction : will be my 1st bike. can fix some basic stuff at my car for example but thats it. no experience with bikes so far. did my license last year. Im 196cm tall.

just had a look/ride at a 1990 FZR 400 RR exup. even though im tall i really liked the bikes handling. im sure i wont get bored with it so easily (lots to learn) and on the other hand in the beginning i can take it easy since its not your 150HP supersportbike.

overall the bike really looked like in a good condition. almost no scratches. no rust. the paintjob still looked good. seat like new. new tires and chain. the seller seems to be thrustworthy and asks for about 1.000 Euro. im currently living in Hungary and i can say the price and condition is very good for the local market. in general i have seen bikes manufactured in 2000 in far worse conditon...

now for some questions. i understand that the 400cc / 4 cylinder engine needs to be revved to be happy but is it normal that it will stall if i let the clutch come very gentle without applying throttle ? sorry if its a stupid question my only comparision is a Kawasaki ER-5 aka driving school "working horse". the FZR idle seemed to be nice and steady and it was really a blast to drive for me

the main point is that the brakes seemed to be weak. i asked the seller about it and he said he had no problems with it. but then again ... from my memory the driving school bikes brakes were much more effective.

still worth buying if i need to replace the brakes (will cost me about 600 Euro?) ?

trying to find someone to check the bike out for me but not sure i will find someone in time ... just trying to get some input here...

cheers

Hi!

The word in red is the key when buying a bike, you can't always trust the person selling the bike ;)

The brakes might just need to be cleaned and serviced which you can do yourself for under 100 Euro (depending on the prices where you are of course!). A tin of brake cleaner, some new pads and fluid, and a bit of time should get them working better.

Can you post a picture of the bike so we can see which model it is? We like pictures.

the brakes should be better than that. you can get the standard ones doing well with a good clean and new fluid. the clutch thing could be due to too low an idle speed. but so long as it pulls well in all gears and has a smooth power curve and no nasty noises or lots of smoke i recon it'll be ok. check the pads and discs if they look warn. knock him down on the price!

that's not an FZR 400 RR, (which is the 3tj1 jap import or 4dx english market model)

i think that's an FZR400 3EN1

both have the exup, but that would be about an 1988 model (the 3tj being 1989 and 4dx 1992 onwards)

i'm sure i'll get :spank: if i'm wrong ;)

still looks pretty tidy though ;) although i'm not sure that's a standard paint job ?

yep 400 3en1 the decals have a shadow of the r which makes it look like it says rr on some may be the source on confusion. looks like they've tried to make it look like a 3tj with the painy. the yam blue spot calipers will fit that i believe.
