hi guys well after a break over the winter i have finally got around to trying to get my trusty little 29 going.

Its had a complete strip down new frame and trying to sort bits out. got a new battery, new plugs, new oil filter, new oil and shiny new super unleaded. does it want to fire up????? no.

Its turning. all the plugs have a strong spark. so bang some easy start in. alas it just laughs at me and still no brum!!!!!!!!

So today we are gonna see if giving it a tow will do much as when we tried bumping it yesterday it sounded promising. If it doesnt go after today then think going to break it as I cant put any more money into her.

Can I also just stay she hasnt ran for nearly a year.

All help greatly appreciated as I am now a bit lost.

Have you cleaned the carbs? Could be stuck float valves not letting the petrol through. Just take the float chambers off and give it a squirt with carb cleaner. Doesn't take long. 8-)

Yeah think stripping the carbs down is my next avenue as its not gonna do it any harm. either that or hitting it with a big hammer

Mine did the back firing thing when i got it, changed the plugs and cleaned the carbs and one of the HT leads was duff. Just replaced the leads with a meter or so of stuff i got from my local bike shop for £2. Bobs your uncle... It started up. Also the generator to reg/rec wiring was unplugged which didn't help! Lol :o

Also check the fuel filters .

Mine did the same thing.

Banging and firing thru the exhaust.

You have to go back to basics and make sure you dont make the situation worse - for example flooding the engine.

This is what I did.

Remove plugs from engine and leave out for a few days to ensure that its not flooded, let them dry out.
Check the plugs are actually firing - 2 of mine didnt - one lead was duff and one plug was duff. In fact buy new plugs and check using them new ones.
Empty the carbs and then make sure they all refill when cranking over.
Use a new battery and make sure its fully charged.
Use fresh fuel, it can go off.
Ensure the coils are wired up in the correct order, you can only check this visually.
Try and start it on a warm day so its more likely to start. Put a heater in the garage over night.

I started mine after 3 days of trying. Choke out and throttle half way open, let go of the throttle and it conked out, turned the tickover screw up and it then started everytime. The revs were set too low.

I left it for about an hour after every 1-2 trys, as didnt want to flood it and also to let the batt recharge as it was on charge.

It was a total pig to start and I thought the engine was fooked as the amount of smoke coming out was like a fog machine for 10-15 mins.

Generator and reg rect being unplugged would make no difference to whether the bike started or not.

our issue after getting ht leads correct was the idle screw! something so simple

The tickover screw was my MAIN problem and I think all my starting problems stemmed from that.

Wouldnt start with choke out, flooded engine, destroyed plugs, made battery go flat.

It should have started on 3 cyclinders ( one lead was fubard ).

3 days of pratting about and going back to basics all for a tickover screw setting.

I now always put my bike on charge for 20-30 mins before trying to start.

I think I need a cut off switch for the battery to completely disconnect from the loom.

I started mine last week on 2 cylinders, I handnt run it for a month. Most bikes should start on 2, sounds rough but at least its going and then the other 2 kick in.
