Best Oil In A FZR400 Race Bike?

Post by Woddy »

Hi everyone,

I have searched high and low on the internet to find out what would be the best oil to use for my FZR 400 race/track bike, there is so many different people using different weight and branded oils etc.. But this info was from people with day to day road registered FZR 400 bikes and not race machines! My engine has done one track day with the previous owner since it's rebuild by Leo at NM Tuning (I havn't been out on it yet!), I have spoke to Leo today and he advises to use a 10w-40 semi synthetic oil and change it regular like every other track/race day! I know he knows whats best for these engines but i was just after a few other opinions from people who race these?

Many thanks

I'm just using Hein Gericke (read MOTUL) standard 10w-40 semi :peace:

£23 a gallon.
Conventional wisdom says to know your limits. To know your limits you need to find them first. Finding your limits generally involves getting in over your head and hoping you live long enough to benefit from the experience. That's the fun part.

semi synth 10/40 motul. but as long as it's semi and bike specific, its more the frequency of changing that keeps the engine healthy I recon.

Tis true - you can spend a lot of money on oil but other than using 10w40 semi syth you'll waste it.

Do not be tempted to use fully sythetic, the clutch will probably slip. You could in theory use a single grade rather than a multi (the numbers are ambient temp ranges 10w = minus 10 degrees winter) but there's no real advantage and it's harder to find.
Hein Gericke are offerring 30% off atm so it comes down to £17.50

Great, cheers guys!!!

It's easier for me to buy of ebay so would this type of Motul be ok? - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motul-5000-Mo ... 415b73244f

While we are on topic - I have noticed that the bike is not running an oil cooler is this something i should be worrying about? Also how much oil will my bike take without the cooler on or will it not make a difference? I will be changing the filter aswel..

Many thanks

Mr Evil will correct me if I'm wrong but I think the oil cooler is full of water from the cooling system, it just wraps around the oil filter housing.
I would say if you are racing the bike it might be worth having the oil cooler, My bike has a cooler with a Pace race rad and can still run quite hot.
Only use semi synth oil as fully synthetic will make the clutch slip. I use Silkoline 10w 40. semi.
Barnett clutch plates & springs are very good for the FZR.
If you have no oil cooler your bike is probably an RR so it could be upgraded with a 9 plate SP clutch for better performance.
Hope this helps.

That oil should be ok
2.3 litres (it's written on the clutch casing by the oil filler).

Thanks for the reply..

Yes my bike is a RR SP 8-)!! Only reason i noticed was because there is a spacer on my oil filter with two male inch length pipes running off it and i thought hmm surely there is suppose to be oil pipes going to them!! So if it's water cooled then where does it run of the main water system? I couldn't see it on the water diagram?? :? What steps would i need to take to put a cooler on?

Thanks
