SAE 10W-40?

Can additives like Prolong be used?
Have used it in the past on the race drag bike with great success but those engines are a completely different beast.

SAE 10w-40 yes that be it , any old make as long as you stay with the same make each time you change your oil should be fine , i use this stuff had no probs with it since using it , http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-Si ... 27c26bad8a
as far as additives ive never really seen the need for it on a NC30 ,

Brand name makes fuck all difference at all bud. As long as it's bike specific, it's fine.

Whats bike specific...surely the oil is defined by the base stock, viscosity and any additives.
Wouldn't any high quality semi-synthetic 10W-40 be suitable irrespective of whether it has a car or bike on the label?

Nope, car stuff has nasty additives in it that can wreck a bike engine.

sorry my bad was ment to say bike specific , late night last night  , but ive always been told like you say that the make isnt important, but once you start using a brand of oil say castrol that every time you change your oil you should use the same castrol oil again , and try not to say use putoline oil when you used castrol before thats what i was always was told when racing mx ,

cheers sam

To educate myself here...what are these additives and what will they do?
I ask because all my previous bikes have used Castrol GTX with no apparent ill effects even at high mileages although granted this is my first Honda...
