head gone??

Hi all, need some quick advise on my fzr4/6 the engine has cone type filters and not the standard air box today I started the bike after sorting out other issues and noticed a lot of smoke from the crank case breather pipe.

This pipe should be going to the air box but as I am not using the air box its just vented to the atmosphere, after the bike was running for a while I blocked the vent pipe and released when I could feel the pressure increase and some yellow oily paste came out togther with the white smoke (I'll call it smoke because it smells).

Now its all pointing to a head gasket, water seems fine and so does the oil a friend has advised that it needs a thrashed out on the road to clear?? but Iam not sure. This white smoke s coming out of the breather all the time on tickover and higher and will not clear had it running for a good 10mins.

Where can I route the crank case breather if Iam not using the standard airbox??? and secondly I have another engine history unknown which Iam think about replacing...

Any ideas.... especially on the give it a good run to see if it clears?? or should I just replace engine?

Thanks

Jools

Does it start ok ?
Does the white smoke (steam) come out the exhaust and what do the plugs look like. Is there water in the header tank ?

What your mate might be trying to say is that there's condensation in the oil which is evaporating when the engines run. You could give it a run to get the oil and coolant up to temp then have a look at the breather.

What you need is a catch tank try cable tieing a drinks can somewhere and put the pipe into it.

starts fine, no steam/smoke from exhaust, I drained the water and seems ok, I've changed the plug old ones are black but dry..

If I put a catch tank on the end of the breather what should I be looking for???

The engine sounds ok, I think it's just condensation in the oil. Either change the oil or run it up to temp and take the oil filler off to let some of the water vapour out.

The engine breather will just have oil mist coming out. K+N do a little filter for crank case breathers it might be easier than a can. The breather just allows the pressure from inside the engine to escape that air has an amount of oil mist in it.

Will run up to temp again and take oil filler cap off and will get it on the road for a blast...will change the oil and see how we go...

In the top of the FZR engine is a steel plate above the gearbox area, it is a kind of baffle type arrangment that leads out to the crankcase breather pipe. It could be that this has water on top of it if the engine has been started then stopped without getting really hot. When I rebuilt my engine it was rusty inside, the 600 is very similar.
Give the bike a really good run (1/2 hour at least) then see what happens.

you can get the filters for about6quid of evilbay. just need to know the diameter of the pipe.
