R1 Regulator

I have just purchased a 2nd hand one of these from ebay from an 03 bike. I have fitted and tested in and all working well with 14.4 volts at tickover.
Due to being a bit bigger than my faulty stock nc30 regulator, the rear panel will not fit on. I was thinking of relocating the R1 regulator to the space just above the battery on the back of the rear mudguard.
My questions may seem obvious to you but here goes,
does this unit have to be mounted to the frame for earthing purposes, if so could I add an earth wire between a fixing bolt on the R1 regulator and the frame.
As this unit can get hot when running do you think that moving it to my proposed new location will cause any issues with air flow for cooling.
What have other people done with locating this R1 regulator.
Regards Dave
