Hi there everybody,

I´m just about to finish the build up of my overhauled NC29 engine to an race/trackday/street engine. I know sounds funny but I dont give a shit about the german MOT so street use Is now problem but I have some questions about the camshaft drive gears before I´m going to install the cylinderhead:

- Is it usefull to remove the silcener gears from the camshafts to get more power through less inner resitance?
- Is it usefull to remove the silencer gear from the intermediate gear
- If thoose two things are usefull, what do they do to the engine and how could I remove them without destroying the camshaft and the intermediate gear?

Fast help would be great cause I want to assamble the engine tomorrow.

Cheers, the crazy german

From what I understand from this place... the gains are minimal (really tiny, like <1hp) but the racket it makes is very loud and sounds horrible. You will definitely loose the nice noise the cams make, too. I think this would be a shame.

Alright,

But why people do this work on their Race/Trackday bikes? Better throttle response? for loosing rotating mass in the engine or why?
I mean less than 1 Hp is even for race-engines a bad tuning so there must be an other sense for that.??

Regardless of amount, any more power is a benefit for a 400cc racebike, especially when this doesn't cost anything to do, just time. Every bit of increased power adds up.

It's a common mod on nc30/35's because you can just unbolt the quietening gears from the cam, but on the nc29 you'll need to grind off the studs. This has been covered in the past (with pics), a search might turn it up. Whether it's worth the time and effort is up to you.

I quite like the sound when they're removed, it's certainly not as offensive as a dry clutched ducati!

I've seen (heard!) plenty of nc29 racebikes in Oz without the cam quietening gears.

Alright, so that sound makes the engine louder or just different in her sound? I talked to graeme france and he says i should leave them on but I quess i just go for Kent cams but they have thoose quietning too or do they don´t?

So maybe somebody can help out with the three questions I asked when opening this topic.

And sorry for my sometimes bad english. as my name says I´m from germany and didn´t practice alot english language.

Cheers

Just to clarify - we remove the quieting gears on our full race engines with adjustable cam wheels - with Kent Grind.

We have the Cams ground with or without quietening gears.

On a mild tune engine we leave them on.

I have RLRMotors tuned engine with KentCams and they leave silencer gear in.
