when i sold the fz r4 i said i wouldn't have another one because the first one was special, and because it was special i didn't want to ruin the good memories i had of that bike, well i have another one, only this one i intend on keeping standard, it needs a few bits like a tail fairing and a screen that isn't yellow, but mostly it has a need of a clutch push rod and a bearing thats broke in the gear box, so does anyone know how easy it is to get the cases off, i've been lead to believe its a case of pulling the engine out dropping the fluids and turning it upside down so i can split the cases, but if memory serves there were a few bikes of that era with a couple of bolts under the barrels, is the fzr one of them? oh its going to get painted too, its a bloody awful set of colours at the moment, it will be going red white and blue oh and its a 3en2.

Hi mate
I'm pretty sure there are bolts under the barrels on these engines, WHY WHY WHY!!!
It was a few years ago that I did my rebuild but I do remember thinking that's a shit design!
If the push rod is damaged can you push it out through the gearbox shaft I'm sure the hole goes all the way through from the clutch side to just under the sprocket cover. Evilchicken will know for sure.

Dobbs

Just re read the bit about the gearbox bearing.. that's an arse!

You can get the rod out using a magnet

yep, rod came out in 2 pieces, not sure where the bearing is thats broke but there was no swarf in the oil and i cant find any chunks or flakes in the sump, dont really want to pull the engine apart if i dont have to, but at the same time i dont want to assume that its ok only to find out that i would have been better to rip it down once rather than have to do it twice. now do i nail it back together and hope for the best or investigate further? could always nail in a 600 if the engine lets go couldn't i?

Put it together enough to run it and use a stephascope and have a listen. That way you'll know whick bearing to check / replace. You could put it up on a stand and go through the gears just to check that too.

Not bad - I'm sorting out the headlight position atm. I put new bulb in and bent the terminals through 90deg so they don't push on the fairing so much. Then they got pushed down by the rad expansion chamber.
