i had this trouble, but it will fit with a bit of persuasion
unless you wanna pay Mr yam £30 for one from fowlers,
if it has the mesh sides then just squash it down a bit (should only be 10mm to tall) don't use the air filter lid to squash it or you'll knacker the threads
if it's got perforated sides (alot stiffer) then you need to do around the middle of the side with the shaft of a screwdriver to put a small dent in it then you can squash it down to make it fit
as long as it seats in the top and bottom of the air box and is no more than about 10mm to long to start then you'll be ok,

Good idea, its the perforated type.
I was thinking of getting some thicker gasket and longer bolts tbh

I cut some sponge type material and made a seal between the airbox and filter
got some longer bolts, the lid now sticks up about 6mm higher.
I never modded the filter
Job done
the number on the filter was 418850

just goes to show there's more than 1 way to skin a cat
got any pics of what you did?
best bit is both method are easily reversible should someone start making the right size air filters
