Help with ideas for different NC24 Wheels.

In the search for a more modern sized set of wheels to fit my 24, therefore making the choice of rubber available wider i've been doing a lot of searching on the net. Most people seem to be doing NC30/35 mods and i've not been able to find anything relating to the 24.

Has anyone changed their NC24 wheels?

My current train of thought is as follows:

Rear:
Enkei VFR750R [RC36] 94 - 97 Rear wheel: (17x5" with 160/60/VR17 rubber)

This wheel is 4 stud, I just need to track down the PCD and see how much difference from the 24, if any that it has. Apparantly the sprockets need spacing out a few mm too which shouldn't be too much of a problem.

This will bring the ride height down a little though so it'll need to be jacked up a little. I can get a mint wheel for £20 too! Just need it coating white :D

Front:
Not so much of a problem for 30 owners as the 17" wheel on these is still pretty standard today.

I can get hold of a set of NC30 forks with wheel / calipers / disc. Any idea if these will fit in my yokes or if I need those to / can get them to fit?

I've also read about the Rick Oliver? ZXR400 fork conversion. Not seen anything relating to fitting this onto a 24, if the NC30 forks fit, sureley this would too?

Tyre sizes for both are 120's / 60 / 17's IIRC so either option would be ok, although the 30 forks would be cheaper.

Any thoughts, ideas / comments, especially from peopel who've used these on their bikes.

The main problem i think for the rear wheel is that it is already very close the exhaust link pipe, and so a wider tyre might reach the pipe, but that is just speculation. Streetfighter from this forum just uses a 140 tyre on the standard wheel, which he says comes very close to chain.

However, if you do go about sticking the 160 wheel on then myself and several others would very much appreciate a write up ;)

No problemo, I have a 140 rear at the moment, it is pretty close.

I've asked my mate to keep hold of the vfr wheel so i'll let you know how it goes.

Front wheel looks identical to the RC24, which is a 17inch front for the 88/89 years and looks like the NC24 discs should fit straight on.

If you're near Birmingham or Coventry I've got a spare ding'd wheel you can try out or I can give you measurements for it if you'd like.

Interesting... I'm only in Wolves so not too far.

I was looking at that.. found the older one, it's white yeah and looks the same... could be an option.

Does your dinged wheel have a tyre on it? I'm just thinking about mud guard clearance...

That one is the newer type, the 88-89 ones[1] look like this
Image

Yeah it's got a tyre on[2], downside is I think it may be a 2.5 rim as it wears a 110/80 tyre as standard[3] so apart from going up to a 17inch rim it's still not modern. I've also got a broken mudguard for the same which might solve the mudguard issue which you can also have a play with should you want.

OTOH the early 90-93 RC36's have the same look front wheel (and same discs again) but wears a 120/70 and is a 3.5 inch rim.

[1] 86-87 are 16inch
[2] I bought an engine for mine and the guy selling it also let me have all the other bits he hadn't managed to sell including both wheels.
[3] I remember it's got a 150 tyre on the back so it might not be a standard front size either.

...Interesting. I'll have to check out that early 36 wheel.

In the mean time i've managed to pick up a standard NC24 wheel with good bearings and tyre (5mm BT45) (both of mine were shagged) for £35 delivered to tied me over till I have found something to replace it.

I did some digging into that 88/89 wheel and although looking the same as the current front it wears a 110 by default, so only 10mm wider and as you say, not 'modern'

It strikes me as odd that there as still quite a lot of 21 / 24's around yet no one seems to have upgraded the front wheel to something that you have a wide choice of rubber on.

It looks like it's going to be the later wheel I posted the link to, but as it claims to fit straight onto a 30/35 i'll have to get some spacers made up / calipers probably moved too. We'll see when I get hold on one!

As for the rear, THIS is the most likely candidate not only does it match the proposed front but it wears a 160/60VR-17

Giving me 120/70/17 @ the front
160/60/17 @ the rear.

After a quick measure up the only trouble I can forsee with the rear is the link pipe for the end can will need some modifcation as it'll hit the tyre as it stands now, but thats not a major problem.

I'll let you know how it goes / if anything else turns up....

I thought that was a 170 but looking here http://www.dropbears.com/u/utilities/tyrerim.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; it'll take a 160 no problems.

Ah cheers for that link, that application guide is very useful! :D

Anything wider than a 160 would hit the chain :/

It seems someone else is along with my thinking

http://www.vsource.org/VFR-RVF_files/NC ... rwheel.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Might be useful for people wanting to 17" the rear of the 30 without using an NC35 wheel, seems similar to the bros conversion tbh.
