float bowl

Hi, I recently have purchase a gsxr 400 sp through eBay. The person I brought it off was not that honest in the description, and I am in the process of sorting out a few major issues. Basically the float bowl has got a crack in it. The experienced bike mechanic I am using sealed the crack but now can seem to get the bowl back on the carb. The carbs are still on the bike and he said it would be very expensive to strip and see what the problem is. He said it is unlikely just to be the float bowl that is damaged. He did say that there was glue around the seal to hold the petrol in till it was sold. Anyway, just wondering if anyone has had similar issues and if they know how to resolve the problem. Thanks

Hmm, is the mechanic a good friend?
You don't say which GSXR you have.
I have pulled the carbs on and off my GK76a a number of times in the past, and I can now do it in 20 minutes, so i'm not sure why your mechanic is having difficulties, given that i'm far from a professional.
There are two screws holding the float bowls on the carb bodies, which are a known problem in terms of corroding and seizing in place. I wonder if the float bowl was damaged removing one of the screws?
My advice would be to remove the carbs and see how they look before you go any further. You may have problems in one of the others that you can't yet see. If it's a GK76a, you can use the float bowls from an RF600 or RF900, if you can't find a genuine GSXR one, as they're the same.
If cost is an issue, take the bike home and remove the carbs yourself. You can do it in an afternoon, and if you need help then there are plenty of helpful souls over here!

i agree with jaicen. bring it home & strip it to see whats damage inside. gather info here, then change whatever is damaged. after rebuild, source for carbtune & retune. btw, there shouldnt be glue. it wont be able to hold @ all. a proper gasket is needed. i'll be making my 1st move of rebuild carbs myself this week cos tired of seeing mechs strip it over & over again but problem never ends...

btw, what you mean by expensive to strip? if to just strip a carb is expensive, bring the bike home, strip it yourself, bring the carbs to the mech, can??

Bike is back. Will have a look myself but not very good with this kind of thing. The float bowl is off now and the gasket is flush with the metal, should there be a lip so when it is back on it provides better seal?
U mentioned carb tune? Is that hard to do, do I need specialist equipment.
It is a g76a, but I'm not sure if I can take the carbs off without causing more issues. Person has just taken bowl off the carb whilst bike still together but can see exactly where leak is coming from.

i'm riding a gk76a too. carbtune = "morgan carbtune". its use to sync / balance all 4 carbs. you need to google & google with all sorts of words+gk76a / gsxr400. but gsxr400 can stand for other models but its worth a try. you will find tony sleep, mixture screws settings, adjust float heights, then you need o-rings, then just get from VVS! i'm from singapore, down here has a few suzuki shops but i still get from VVS.
taking the carbs out, you just need to remove the right fairing cos it can only be out from that side. dont try the left side.
btw, where are you located? wonder where's stripes...
