fzr400rrsp hybrid- changing logbook/v5 for extra cc

Post by cagiva996 »

now the hybrids properly finished i thought i ought to let the dvla know of the increase of engine capacity,as i didnt want to get stiffed for a load of back dated road tax if i got stopped by the old bill, as the road tax classes are different.has anybody re registered their 400 as a 600?did it cost?was it a ballache?what was involved in the process?any pearls of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.might be handy as a sticky as there seem to be a good few hybrids out there.

Shirley you just fill out the V5 with a different engine number and capacity ?
The charges should be on the form or on the DVLA's website

It's free to change the engine size on the V5, 'all' you have to do (in theory) is write the new capacity on the change of details bit and send it off. In reality, they're likely to want to see the bike to confirm it is what you say it is and check it's been done right.

It might be a good idea to SORN the '400' while the change over is processed, you don't want to give them any reason to stiff you for back taxes, or any reason for the computer to say no.

SORN the 400 (and surrender the tax disc for a refund)
Tell the DVLA the bike is now a 600 (the SORN will give a reasonable time for the engine swap, and the bike hasn't been used on the road with an invalid tax disc.)
Tax the 600 and ride it.

It'll take more time than simply sending the log book away but I just think it makes more sense to keep the process and black and white as possible with no areas of grey to cause confusion at Swansea.

I sent my V5 off with both a change of engine number and capacity, the DVLA sent it back with the engine number changed but not the capacity. To change the capacity they wanted either a letter from the garage that performed the work, an engineers report or a letter from the importer of the new engine that the engine number was valid and the capacity of the new engine.

Yamaha will supply the importers letter (or would a while ago) if the machine is a genuine UK model, most 600s we use are so this shouldn't be a problem.

I sent this letter off to the DVLA and got the V5 back with capacity and taxation class changed. Got the bike taxed and rode off into the sunset!

A bit of a ball ache, but I'd rather be fully legal.

best to go by the book on this and it sounds like the sorn then re-register route with covering letter is your best bet (iv'e not done this but dvla need it simple and easy to understand, bloody halfwits)

when i got my tj the frame number was wrong on the V5
it said 3T11blabla and the frame was 3TJ1blabla
after 3 set's of V5's they final got it right
first they changed the engine and frame number around but the frame /engine numbers were right if in the wrong place
then they got the numbers the right way around but the frame number was wrong again
then i sent pics for the hard of thinking and they finally relented and gave me the right numbers in the right places

it's like dealing with kids ;) one step at a time with words of one syllable

enjoy
