K&N Filter - putting in tonight! some advise please

hiya All,
K&N Filter - putting in tonight! some advise please
The Bike is running Rich.
800 miles on, the bike is running even richer. (Ok, new can on, hopefully thats the reason.)
I'm pulling out the old Air filter tonight.
If I see the old filter is splattered with oil, Do I leave the old filter in, get the bike sorted 1st, before putting in the K&N Filter?
Hope you can advise

PS:
Looking forward to seeing if there is any difference with the K&N Filter in. Hopefully will run less rich - until I get the bike properly dyno'ed.

it will run even richer with a K&N waste of money IMO, idealy you need to get the fueling set up on a dyno...its the only sure way.

Um... but dosen't a K&N Air filter let through more air? (Ie will make the mixture LESS Rich???)

Mr Honda got the air filter design down pat. K&N air filters dont really add anything to the bikes. take that back.. they give them carb icing in winter!
the ONLY use K&Ns have is the fact they are reusable.. and the only reason why i have one, in winter i switch back to a OEM filter as i dont have time to fanny about with carb icing.. and yes i have experienced it 1st hand 1st winter i had the K&N in.
you need to get your bike retuned to get it to run right.

maybe, but at least for the next 2-3(more?)years i can clean and re-oil the K&N instead of buy new every time.

I use a K&N too - never had carb icing. And yes, i ride the bike in Winter (at -14° C)

Hiya All,
Mystery probably solved, as to why bike was running rich....
The Old Air filter was filthy! 800 miles on from last service..... not happy with the Workshop!
With the new K&N Filter in, the bike is much stronger all around. Also, Man, when I wack the throttle open, the back end squats and the front goes light! I've never had that before with the 400!
The throttle response seems a bit sharp now, noticable a slow speed manuovers. This could just be a case of me getting use to the new set up.
Early days yet, will let you know how I get on, one month on etc.

You might want to have a look at your rear shock then!
I've used K&N's on pretty much every bike I've owned purely cos you can clean them as often as you want, as LP says. Cant say I've ever suffered from carb icing myself, but I wouldnt get too stressed about it.
Was only teasing about the shock, enjoy it!!!
