TRX850 enging in a 3TJ

Putting a TRX850 enigne in a 3TJ is somehting I have been thinking about for a while to use for sprint hill climb racing. A nice mix of outstanding handling and gerat torque.

I found through the search that I'm not the only one to have though of this but has anyone actualy done it?

So far I have got a complete tatty 3TJ (none runner) and a set of TRX850 engine casings with barrels, head and oil tank.

I will be posting progress with picks as I do things but with having an 8 month old son and a house with no kitchen there is not much spair time so please be patient!!

i think I've heard of it being done, but Kayla had a look at it and found it a bit too complicated. I'm sure she'll be along to tell you about it soon.

If your looking for something punchy in the 3TJ frame then the 918 blade engine would go in. If it has to be a twin then maybe a KTM 950 / 990 / 1190 but I doubt that would be at all easy

If you do start the project, take lots of pictures!

I looked at doing it with a 1WG frame because I didn't have a 3TJ chassis at the time and it would've needed too much cutting and welding around the rear engine mounts. but I think the 3TJ is a better frame to start with because it's designed to have the engine hung from it, rather than have a cradle bolted to it like the 1WG frames.

From the searches I done, it seems like you need to move the oil tank and I think the plate near the headstock might have to be relieved too, but I'm not sure. I'd love to get hold of another TRX or TDM engine and have a proper go at it.

edit- where in the world are you?

I do know some one here in Aus that has fitted a TDM850 engine into a 3TJ. For road use.

I also had thoughts of fitting a TRX850 eng into a 3TJ for a race bike. But decided against as I dont think that engine is a good design for racing.

The KTM engine would also be my choice.

like this one (bottom of page)

although i seem to remember reading right-ups on this bike and the frame needs some major strengthening or it will twist or bend

tis bloody mental though

I have read about the Blade engine 3TJ  but I think it may be a bit much for what I'm doing. With sprint hill climbing it's all about torque not power. Now the KTM idea is a great one and praps somthing I will investigate in a few years if funds exist. Although I am a bit of a Yamaha man.

One of the blokes I race with has a TZR250RRSP with an RSV engine.

Pete, if you have any picks of the bike in Aus I would be fascinated to see them. Or a link to where info may be?

Kayla, I'm near Stone in Staffordshire, UK. Will have to check my profile as that was supose to be in there!!

I have put my spare frame over an empty set of engine casings (looks like a complete engine only lighter) and the oil tank doesn't seem to have any issues it looks more like the carbs are going to interfear with the cross brace in the frame but not having had any of the mounting bolts it was all just a little too vague to make any proper judgements.

Hawk, thanks for the info I will have a google and see what can bee seen!!

One of my other thoughts had been the Triumph 675 Daytona engine but I was trying to stay in the 750 to 1300 class. Going to have to wait more than a few years befor I can get one of the 800 Tiger engines.

Thanks for all the input so far!!

It has been done, there was an article on the subject in motorcycle mechanics some years ago. Required some serious modification of the frame spares and i think the rear cross member.

Correct me if im wrong but does a 918 bladse motor not produce more torque than the trx 850?
