Someone has bypassed the thermostat then.. which usually means there is some kind of cooling problem...

Firstly sort the temp gauge out as this is the easiest and will give you an idea of how hot the bike is running.

The temperature sensor is screwed into the thermostat housing and the connector is a push-on wire. Pull the connector off and with the ignition turned on touch the connector to an earth point, the gauge should shoot to the top. If it does the gauge is ok and either the temperature sender is faulty or the wire wasn't connected properly (a new sensor is £30'ish)

If the gauge dosn't move you have a wiring fault with the gauge or the gauge is dead.

Fan Switch

The fan is usually controlled by another sensor in the radiator (again around £30.00), the switch somone has installed will just bypass this, one of the wires from the switch will goto earth, the other wire should go back onto the sensor.

Sort the temp gauge out first and see how hot the bike is running. If it's been bypassed theres usually a problem somewhere or somone was paranoid about it getting hot enough to turn the fan on..

could be something as simple as a faulty fan switch and someone didn't wanna fork out £30 to replace it!
