3TJ RR SP clutch into an RR...? Will it go?

hi i have an 89 3tj rr which i started racing at the end of last season, but the clutch is hopeless! after only one raceday of about five or six starts it was knackered! i gather the SP versions had one extra plate for more durability, but does anyone know if it will fit into an RR? i think mine is 8 plates and the SP nine... the bike has had some mild tuning so need to get something that can cope with a bit more abuse - its really not going to be economical to have to change the clutch after the end of each day!!!
also anyone got any recommendations in terms of clutch plates and springs to use for racing? thanks!

We ran with Honda plates and Kevlar Fiction material which despite our NC30s tall first gear lasted a whole season of full bore racestarts. Maybe check out one of the kits on EBC's website.
Might be cheaper than an SP clutch assy

there are some barnett race clutches that seem to be quite good, last saw them on ebay but maybe a google will find them! otherwise think you need the sp basket to hold the 9 plates, you could consider new springs as well making it a bit stiffer. Also check that it is adjusted properly, there is an adjuster on the sprocket cover that uses a screw type adjuster.

Yes I think you need the basket too.
EBC do a race spec kevlar plate kit too.

An SP clutch will fit straight in, you need the whole assembly to change it over. I dont have any problems with std plates with barnett springs. You might want to think about getting your clutch basket bound by welding an aluminium ring around the front edge of the basket to stop it trying to splay out.

Had a Barnett clutch in my 3tj race bike for 2 seasons and something like 60 starts and it's still well within service limit! RR basket mid 70bhp. Go for the drag spec clutch and springs, have the basket banded and ensure adjustment is perfect.

I have Barnett springs with standard plates which cured the slipping problems I had on my SP, It also has a banded basket.
I also found that fully synth oil seemed to make it worse. I now use semi synth changed every other race/track day with no trouble.

Good point, never use fully synthetic it makes the clutch slip. I always use 10w 40 semi synth changed after every race meet.

thanks all! looks like new springs (heavier duty ones) will be first to go in, then if that doesnt sort it may have to go for an sp basket... roll on sunny times :)

Make sure you get barnett springs, I've used other heavy duty springs and they dont seem to last 2mins!
