whats the benefit of doing the 520 chain conversion on the 3tj over the standard 428 chain? i need to change chain and sprockets as it has been advised on the MOT last year, its due in a couple of months.

I could be wrong but a 428 seems small for a 400, I thought a 520 was the standard size.
I had a 428 on my old 125 Cagiva race bike and that was smaller than standard.
Anyone know for sure?

am pretty sure 428 is the standard size, been checking out bandcexpress, they do the sprockets fot 520 conversion. they dont seem to list the chain though.

428 is the standard sized chain for the 3TJ.

I think a lot of racers/track dayers started fitting 520 conversions for the extra strength and the wider range of sprocket sizes that are available in that size, which enabled the final gearing to be altered to suit each circuit easier, and it just filtered through to road bikes.

When I bought my 520 conversion kit from B&C in April 2007 the part numbers were as follows:

322-520-15 - Renthal Gearbox Sprocket.
175-520-44 - Renthal Rear Sprocket.
520AP-106 - Tsubaki Alpha O-Ring Chain.

I assume the 106 in the chains part number refers to 106 links, any 520 chain will do fine providing that it is at least 106 links long.
If I was buying another 520 conversion kit, I would be tempted to buy a steel rear sprocket too, as the alloy one that I bought was badly worn after a couple of thousand Kms, and it was maintaind regularly so the wear wasn't caused by neglect.

Buster's on ebay are doing 520 conversion c+s kits for the fzr400 for 50 quid including postage don't know the make but are heavy duty. I've ordered one so i'll let you know the quality.

The c+s arrived. The chain is from the Czech Republic, Professional racing chain it says, my bike is a Genesis so it's only got 104links. The rear sprocket is a carbon steel one and the front hardened steel by the looks of it. Only main gripe i have is the link for the chain is a spring one so a proper one is on order.

A spring link will be fine with the chain but it's up to you

I've ordered a rivet link for piece of mind, having had one snap on me before on a 250. The chain then wrapped it's self around the swingarm and bent it.

im running a 520 chain on my hybrid with a split link/clip as i hate not being able to clean the chain properly.i know some people frown on it but i did 3 track days on it this year and 1000s of road miles and no problems and it means you can take the chain off to clean it-i just replace with a new clip/link each time to be safe

Front Sprocket : 287-520-15
Rear Sprocket : 175-520-45HA
520 Chain : 520MXP-104

All fit no bother
