VFR400 NC30 Brake Caliper Rebuild Kit?

Post by brookracing »

Hi, I'm new to the forum and looking for some advice on the best place to get an NC30 front and rear brake rebuild kit, in your experience is it worth doing the master cylinder too?

My brakes are binding and generally perform poorly, I plan on rebuilding them with braided hoses and some EBC HH pads, unless anyone else has a better suggestion?

Your time would be greatly appreciated!

Yep - Agree - for the moeny you get newer brakes, ninja power and the kudos.

Downsides are more unsprung weight...but hey..nobody seems to care about that!

SP1 calipers are lighter and stiffer than NC35 calipers, don't know about NC30 calipers. Of course with the NC30 you need special mounts which probably offset any weight saving!

OK, so standard calipers are pants and I'm not gunna get any sort of performance out of them, agreed.

I notice Rick Oliver sells the conversion kits, any idea of price? As for calipers, what price did you pay? I'll keep my eye out for some... I take it you dont need to change discs, will the pads wear evenly or will they ledge, not sure on pad dimensions on SP1? Has anyone changed the master cylinder too for extra bite?

I've got the bike in bits at the minute to do headstock bearings and re-valve/re-spring the forks and shock so Its exciting times!

Cheers for the help lads!

I think most people change the M/C I certainly did, then again I've not yet used them....

I think I paid about 50 or 60quid for them, certainly far less than the pesky 6 pots on my SV.

FWIW I've only bothered with a caliper rebuild kit on my VFR750 as the seals were shredded[1], normally you can pop the seals out, clean them and re-use them.

The M/C is a different matter, it tends to wear out so needs a replacement kit but again I didn't need one for the VFR until about 50k.

I bought my calpiers for £25 with new pads (ebay bargain) and fitted Ricks adapter plates too. They mate perfectly on the discs, no lips or anything.

I would strongly advise getting a matching m/c though - the std does work but is too spongy and has poor feel especially when compared to the new blade one I got for £15 on the bay.

My brakes are the law now...everything else I have ridden since has got wimpy and squidgy brakes

woah!! hold on to yer horses.
agreed that SP1/Blade calipers are better...BUT a refreshed NC30 brake setup with braided lines are more than capable!
try cleaning up first then decided.

Agreed - but for the £70 nuggets I spent I could have got new pistons, seals and the works for my std calipers..and they would be good..but not great.
