Electrical fault on NC31 :any advice please ?

Hi again ,

Does anyone understand the electrical syatem on the NC31 ? I switched on the ignition last night and the warning lights all lit up as usual. i then pressed the starter button and I think it turned over momentarily and then stopped and all the warning lights went out and all electrics went dead. I thought I could hear a clicking somewhere when I pressed trhe starter button but all warning lights etc stayed off. I played about with all the switches but nothing happened so lost hope and started to arrange for a lift home. After about 5 minutes I switched on again and all was back to normal and it has been OK today. Strange.

I had a look at the fuse box today and it seems to have 4 fuses (10 amp I think) and two spares, one being a 30 amp, but i a haven't a clue where the live 30 amp fuse is mounted.

Anyway if anyone has any ideas or has come across a similar problemI would be very grateful to hear. It was also as though something had tripped out when I pressed the starter button and then re-set itself

hello,first of all...do you have a multimeter and maybe a manual?????
the clicking noise you heard will probably be the starter relay(solenoid).
all i can recommend is doing the usual checks to eliminate possible suspects.......start with the battery,is it getting charged and work your way from there.....connections in good condition no corrosion etc.its a little strange that its working ok again but thats electrics for you,fine one minute then the next its all went to potty!!!!!! :D

Intermittent faults like yours are usually (in my experience) down to a loose or corroded battery terminal connection or main earth lead, but a methodical approach that eliminates electrical components and connections one by one is definitely the way to go.

Thank you very much for the advice. Any idea where the 30 amp fuse is situated ?? There is a spare in the fuse box but no slot for a 30 amp (working) fuse. Strange.

i currently have a similar prob on the nc31 im doing up m8, mine im pretty sure is a dodgly ignition switch as it was a bit temperamental as to where you had it turned once on (had to move it backleft slightly) . ive bought a new switch to try cure it but alas my wiring is different.. infact ive been told its f3 wiring when my bike is an f2 lol. still doesnt help you much i guess,, hope you get it sorted m8.

i think the 30 amp fuse is on the starter relay ill go look see later (my bikes in a mates garage)

Check the wiring on the ignition switch, I had a problem last year which was solved by a small amount of soldering. Also check very connection and give it a good clean as this is usually the cause of most electrical problems.... good luck!

Thanks a lot for all the help. Very interesting and useful. Funnily enough I put a bit of oil in the ignition switch that morning , wonder if that has caused it ??

hi m8 sorry for delay... the 30 amp fuse is indeeed on the starter relay.. which is the relay that comes straight off yer battery posotive cable.
