CBR400F (NC17) Engine alternatives

Hello All, First post here,
There's a '83 CBR400F project bike posted locally that i've been pondering over for a while. The bike seems to be all there, with replacement plastics (Fiberglass... still need to be sanded and painted) as the old ones were garbage, and a seemingly workable frame. The only thing that is missing/has a true problem, is the engine. The Previous owner did a poor job rebuilding the engine by the sounds of it, and has somehow damaged the crank shaft. I'm doubting the bike is worth it, even at 300$ CAD, if the engine is truly shot and I have to find another 400F engine. Here in Canada these bikes are extremely rare, i don't even know of any other 400F's that exist here, but CBR400RR's (88-on, the gross majority of CBR400's, NC23's i believe) are possible to find.
Would an Engine from a NC23, NC29, or even a CBR600 engine fit in this frame without any real modification? Obviously electronics would be different, i'd need the replacement bikes carbs and may need a few replacement electrical things. I should be able to find a suitable 400cc engine for 500$ or so if i know what will fit the frame, or ideally a 400F engine, but that would be very difficult - probably need to be sourced from Japan.
I'd really hope to have it collector plated, and i dont think that would be very likely with a 600 engine, but registration is all there and current so I wouldn't have to jump through any hoops to get it on the road. Please let me know if this is the wrong section of the forum for this, but i dont see where else it could be posted.
