OK, I think I'm gonna start going silly with my track-bike. Now with the ra-air fitted it spins up a lot quicker than it did before and now I want to remove the fly-wheel. I have heard of this being done, and I have seen it in action and it certainly lets the bike spin up a lot quicker plus the weight-loss factor is unbelieveable.

My questions are,
What does the fly-wheel do?
Where is it?
How do I go about removing it?
And if I go that far should I just go total loss, or ditch the quietening gears etc?

If anyone has pictures, experience and feedback from doing this I'd be verry grateful.

it spins around with the crank and holds a magnet inside,when it passes two pickups it induces current which gets feed back to the reg/rec to charge the battery and help run the bike

you need something like two big bars with bolts on the ends to hold the flywheel still while you loose the nut holding it,putting it in gear does nothing as your trying to spin the crank....then use the maahoosive bolt rick sells to screw it in and push the FW back off the motor...a fair bit of work for 2 Kgs of dead weight on the side of the crank

removing it means you are going TL as you are removing one piece of the charging curcuit,then you don't have to buy the rec/reg and you can ditch a fair part of wiring out of the loom,it really is ,in my eyes, all or nothing ,don't do it if you don't want the hassle of charging the battery up after a few sessions,but with it removed you saw how quickly scotties bike span up and that in turn will affect acceleration,it'll be a bit harder to get off the line andyou will drop revs quicker but i think the pros out weigh the cons .....

Whip it off mate. it is easily put back on...no need to drain anything, just make sure you seal the crankcase back up if you remove the wiring

So you know the theory behind it then Rhory. What about I get the gasket and bits ordered from Rick to do this and we do it some Saturday afternoon?

Yes - but you had better be good at it as an out of balance weight ont he end of your crank at 14000revs i going to make a serious mess if it lets go!

Popping a few 10mm drill hols in the flywheel is prbably not the way.

The best solution I have seen is the GSXR swapout by the G Force gang. brilliant work..

I was actually wondering what the wall thickness of the cylindrical part of the assembly was and could a safe amount of material be removed. Don't worry the black and decker is safely locked away.

sticing it ona lathe and mil ing out the insides? hmm - my wife's step dad has a lathe and I can probably get him to take some off the flywheel..hmmmmm
