I'm mounting the SP1 shock this week since I got a flat and can't get another tire for a while. Since I have to move the battery and trim the tray anyway I figured I would take the opportunity to replace the battery.

What are my options for a lightweight battery replacement? Its still going to be mainly a street ridden bike,so It would have to be up to normal charging duties. I have seen some other threads where people made reference to saving weight this way, but no specific brands or party numbers.

It's definitely a good area for a weight saving. The only problem is the NC30 needs some decent cranking amps and with the inherent issues with the charging system, a reliable battery is a good thing. I know that the RGV250 battery is a good weight saving with minimal sacrifice in amps/hour. You could go for a moped battery, but it would be a risk for road use I think.

Just go and have a look at some batteries and choose the smallest one with a good amp/hour rating.

You also need to consider charging rates - if you get a battery which is too small capacity-wise, the charging circuit will end up overcharging it and killing it early.

Somebody once posted images of a battery mounted down near the bottom of the engine - this might be a better alternative for you.

Do you know who it was? I tried searching and couldn't find it. I know people do that on the SP1 and SP2 all the time. I would much rather have the weight down lower and forward if at all possible. I can't figure out how to make a bracket and get this to work though. Extending the wires and finding another ground is easy. I'm concerned about the heat from the headers in the area that seems most obvious to me.

just to reassure you that you are not going crazy, someone did post a pic of the battery down low before, but i cannot remember either

It was Rallykay I think with the battery bolted to the sump. very trick

+1 for thinking it was RallyKay, can't find the thread on the old forum.
