Aftermarket indicators on RVF400

Hey guys,

The RVF i'm probably going to buy has the big original indicators, and they flash really fast..

I want to put the small triangle ones on, but I know they are only held on by one bolt.. Are the original ones held on by a bolt with the same size thread, or would you have to drill your own 4 holes in the fairings to fit the aftermarket indicators?

Also, will there be holes showing in the fairings from the original indicators?

Additionally, how do I fix the problem of the indicators flashing too fast? I did some research and I think it's something to do with putting a new relay in.. How do you install a new relay and how do I know what relay I need?

Last question.. should I get the LED ones or not? Any advantages/disadvantages besides them looking better?

Cheers

Lots of Q's, jonno92. Flashing fast can be caused by a bad faulthy relay...but it may be a bad connection, or bad realy, or maybe bad ground wire(s). But do you have a Haynes Manual? ;) If not, then it is best to get one.

Do the original indicators have led globes? That's a common reason why they would flash fast, the owner hasn't finished the job of putting led's in.

If they're the standard incandescent globes then as Micpec says.

Led's are much more reliable and brighter that's about it. I have them on my nc30, they take some wiring mods to get working corrfectly, not plug and play in my case.

Sounds like a dodgy earth, but it could be a backyard LED job. Best to ask them what they did before

nup no LEDs on the bike, they're the original bulky ones.

Check that they're not using led globes in the original indicator housings.

OK guys i've replaced the front 2 indicators with LEDs. Haven't done the rear indicators yet because I have stripped a bolt taking the rear cowling off, but when I fix that, I will be putting LED indicators there too..

The original indicators all have 12V/10W bulbs (not LED). The LED indicators have 12V/2W bulbs.

With the two front LED indicators and two original rear indicators in, they flash at the same speed as when I had all original indicators.. Also, the turn signal light on the dash flashes faster than normal..

I've pulled the indicator relay out and it is the exact same as this original Honda one..

Could it be a faulty relay? Or is it likely to be something else?

I will have 4 x 2W LED indicators so does that mean I need a relay that says 8W max? Or 4W max (because only 2 flash at a time..)?

Should I try a resistor first? My local shop has these:

If so, where should the resistor connect to?

You need an electronic relay to suit the led indicators, the standard one won't work with them.

Even with the electronic flasher I ran into some problems (all 4 indicators flashed at once). Easy fix was to remove the dash indicator globe, proper solution below:
