Dropping forks through yokes
Hi, i have a few questions regarding dropping the forks through the yokes,
firstly, how do you do it!! And how difficult/quick is it to do?
Will it be worth the hassle?
Im getting the rick oliver fork kit soon, with the 35mm jack up linkage, will this be something to benefit these mods or will it be a bit too much?
Which brings me onto my next questions,
since i am re building my forks, is there anything i should do while theyre off, and is there any bearings that i will destroy removing them, since i want all the bits ready for the rebuild so its only off the road for a weekend. Cheers,
Benny

Re: Dropping forks through yokes
There's not a lot of room in between the wheel and fairing as standard, I've stuck a groove in the V from the tyre (and part out of the inside of the mudguard) under hard braking on a standard height RVF[1].
I've not taken apart VFR or RVF forks but I've had a set of forks destroy the bushes while dismantling. Then again you may want to replace the bushes anyway.

[1] Admittedly it's not set up for my weight but rather for a rider ~4st lighter (its my wifes bike). :D

(1) Its easy to do after a few seconds of looking, although I used a hydraulic lift to hoist the front end.benny1380 wrote:Hi, i have a few questions regarding dropping the forks through the yokes,

(2) Depends how quick a rider you are I guess and the type of riding you do
(3) I dropped my front about 1.5" easily through the yokes, the back is sky high c.4.5" over stock I think. I have a Riley Mod :D
It suits me fine, as I ride it hard, it gets very twitchy on the power and is very quick in steering. It really needs a damper ideally. It is not suited to some one pansying it around, it really needs to be worked. Id really only reccomend it to a quick rider really.

Re: Dropping forks through yokes
Thanks for the replies, maybe ill just leave it for now, and as its wasy to do i can do it one weekend in the future if i want. I have to ride this in every weather, so dont want it to be twitchy, and once im a 'quick rider' i might consider it, im sure the stuff im doing already will benefitr me enough.
Cheers

Re: Dropping forks through yokes
Well I ride mine rain or shine, but I try and ride as quick in the wet as I do dry, so when it gets dry im faster still
.
Twitchy = FUN :D
I used to ride a RSV mille thou which used to shake and slap all the time so I miss that adrenaline.
That said standard settings are still very good for a thrash.

Re: Dropping forks through yokes
right i fitted my new stiffer springs and it feels so much better! It feels a lot twitchier than before, but i guess thats what to expect. The only thing that worried me was i couldnt remember how far through the top yoke the forks poked, so set both to the same, 6mm from yoke surface to top of stanchion. Not sure how much to poke through, maybe it needs more?
I guess ill have to get it set up properly.
And one more thing, i havent got the wire clips under the handle bars, the instructions said 'DO NOT LOSE THESE, BE CAREFUL!) But i didnt have them fitted! What do you reckon?
Cheers, Benny

Re: Dropping forks through yokes
Yeah you dont really need them but here is a part number if you want them (fork circlips part #51405-mb4-003) I got this from Rick Oliver a while back when I asked the same question and he says they are only a couple of quid each from your local Honda dealer

Re: Dropping forks through yokes
if youve dropped the forks then the clips wont fit in the groove as the groove is there so you have both forks equal at the stock setting :)
