Lets begin this with a story
Last night I finished work at 5 and had to be at my girlfriends graduation celebratory shindig by 7 to celebrate, but also meet some of the extended family. I think to myself "2 hours, thats plenty of time to get ready so I'll go for a quick blast on the bike while the suns out!"
take the bike out to the nearest village (hockliffe) on quite a windey road, always good for getting the tyres and engine warmed up, so out along a lovely road from hockliffe to woburn and through to woburn sands.
However on leaving woburn sands I see the national speed limit sign and give her a bit of throttle, she splutters, so I change gear hoping less revs may cause the problem, when out the corner of my eye, I glance my mirror and all I can see is blue smoke! EVERYWHERE
all coming from my exhaust
so over I pull, ring a friend with a van to have my collected, and after making this call my phone dies, so I cant tell the GF that its happened and that I will infact be late round to hers! - punishable only by death!
anyway lets skip to today, got the tool box out and took the panels and tank off etc, drained the coolant fluid (no oil left in the bike what so ever!
moved the coolant resevoir out the way to see a small hole in the rocker cover, my heart sinks, off comes the cover to find this


I then gave up knewing there wasn't much more I could do today really
so realistically whats the damage going to be when I pull the engine out and take it to bits?
I've had a belt go on a car before so know its likely to be all valves, probably broken a few springs along the way too
Anything else?
or does anyone have a spare GK76a engine that they'd be willing to sell, and if so how much?

There was a GK76a engine on ebay for 50 quid but it looks like it's gone sorry. It'll probably be cheaper to buy a secondhand engine though.

differences between GSXR400 and GSF engine?

the 76a engine is your only option unless you want to do alot of work and put in a 750 motor.
i would say you need pistons valves rocker arms and a head if your lucky. If your unlucky then its taken the barrels aswell and more.
Generally this happens as a result of valve clearances being tight on the 76a.
I know the road you was on when it happened and tell the missus i said there is never network along there!
I havent any engines that are spare at the minute as they are all tied up for next season now. But i'll keep my eyes open for you.

I've found a crank case, crank with rods on ebay
Also found a set of barrels
and some "new" pistons for £22 each - I'm thinking these will be made of cheese for that price?

Would just need to find a head if I did it that way....

i would take the top off of yours and see what you have. Dont throw anything away as you may need bits off of it.

i used to ride that road quite a bit up until last year. In fact i have a few pics from the deer park from a march rideout with new tyres on my pc somewhere (or should i say not so new after 50 miles of scrubbing in!) lol

I'd replace the pistons, piston rings, check inside the cylinder for any abbrasion, and cracks or dents to the cylinder and replace all gaskets, seals etc

i could be wrong, but you could have also sheared you're crank shaft, i have only 3 words for you

But seriously, sorry to hear the bad luck. I have seen the blue smokescreen in my rearview a couple of times too....on the NC30!

never ever on a 76a seen crank damage apart from when run without oil. Usually piston lose the crown and it bends rods. Usually i see cam tensioners fail causing damage. Engines i build always have a manual tensioner.

Picked up a bottom end and fully built top end today for £50 which was a nice little touch!
Just gotta sort out a gasket kit and fit the blooming thing!
