GSXR400 GK76 - Cold start problem
Hi,
I have changed o-rings, spark plugs, cdi, full service, cleaned & service carb. I had the compression tested which the bike passed. My mechanic simply can't find the problem.
The bike has a problem starting from cold, the mechanic says that fuel passes to the plugs which causes this problem. He refers to this problem as "oiling of the plugs". Even with the fuel off if left overnight the bike hassles to start. After the bike starts & warms up it runs like a dream. He is currently experimenting with a "hotter" plug thinking this would solve the problem but I thought I'd give the forum a try.
Please help guys, this is the last problem on my bike & I'm sure the experts out there must have come accross something like this. Please help

i've got a similar problem with mine, i need to charge the battery every week because of it, takes longer and longer for it to start up, uses most of the batterys' juice and takes about 5 minutes to warm up when it is running
i'll be watching this thread for some useful information
also using an NGK BR10EG plug set in mine

My mechanic has complained about the same exact problem, he says that the starter draws a high load during starting & ends up killing the battery.
Nobody is reply on the thread though, please guys we need your help.

use a cr8ek plug. Check the resistance of the timing pick up. And check there is no corrosion on all the terminals for the ignition circuit and around the fuse box area

Re: GSXR400 GK76 - Cold start problem
Just finished servicing the engine on the "non starter" I bought.
Switched to CR8EIX plugs which I use on my race bike and it starts first time every time.
Yeah the starter seems to sap a lot of the juice out the battery but I will just be keeping mine on an optimate.

Its very difficult to know, especially when you got a mechanic working on it as he's going to have coverd obvious stuff like bad connections etc. I would be checking the frame to motor and battrey earth is good, also the starter motor and wireing plus the pilot system and posible air leaks, but like i said your mech will have covered the obvious.

Re: GSXR400 GK76 - Cold start problem
Same Crap on this Side down here in South Africa Johannesburg. Cant seem to get this thing to start in the mornings. its a friends bike. GSXR400 GK76A. My Friend replaced the motor but neva could get her to start, I've tried and she does eventually start after putting the correct firing order, she starts and these 400 gk76 has an amazing power band. A few good swings does the trick. Once bike does start, she starts fine everytime after for that day. until the next morning, then she just drains the battery, she back fires alittle then she takes start fine no problem, I still need to adjust the Pilot air screw for perfect idling. My problem is why does she take so long to start in the morning. I have checked the Valves clearances, Will double check what spark plugs I have on that bike. One HT lead is alittle fault. but she does start eventually. What I cant understand is she takes long to start in the mornings. But once she starts, she is able to start everytime after that very quickly unlike the first time round. But the next morning the same story, takes long to start the first time in the morning, any suggestions?
Im fully mechanically minded, I rebuild bikes alot, but this Gixxer gsxr 400 gk76, is known for their carbs and starting issues. Help!

Another South African :)
I've had similar issues, though they seem to have gone away of late. I've gone through new plugs, new caps and new HT leads. Not 100% sure which of that lot sorted it out. Check the plug caps are firmly in the lead, that was a certain problem I had, the leads were vrot and the caps were loose. I also have an overfueling issue atm, which might mean I'm leaking fuel overnight into the cylinders. Do you need choke to start?
If you connect a moerse battery does that help? Before mine was running nicely I seemed to flatten the battery starting, so connecting a car battery was frequent.
When you do get it running in the morning, does it immediately run on 4 cylinders, or does it take a little heat to kick them all in?
