I need some suggestions on a problem I have with my 3EN2.
It has been laid up just over a year and, and I have been trying to get her started with limited success.
When I rode the bike regurley it had an odd habbit of losing power and stopping at any time on a ride.
When trying to re-start the bike would start on one or two cylinders and just sit at a very rough tickover and would not rev any further, this would continue for a minute or so and then the bike would kick in with the rest of the cylinders and away we would go for the rest of the journey.
This would happen once or twice a week.
I changed the coils , cdi unit ,plugs, striped cleaned and set the carbs and it made no difference.
so roll forward one year of a lay up and the bike is super hard to start and when it does it only stays on that very rough tickover and does not clear it self.
So whatever the odd fault was has now become a full time fault.
I have re-striped and cleaned the carbs to clear any old resadue from the lay up.
I have a feeling it must be electrical but am not sure what else to check.
What do you think?

The valve clearances need doing.

If the engine catches and runs rough the heat of the two cyliders warm the head causing the tollerances on the other cylinders to close and seal the valves so the they then fire up. You can do it yourself as long as you take it steady - have a look for the pressent copy of Pratical Sportsbike they have article with pics in it. If you choose to take it to a garage it will be about £300 as there's a lot of labour involved.

maybe worth checking the fuel pump and the fuel filter

Not fuel it's lost compression. Do a comp test and you'll probably 0 on one or more cylinders.

I done the valves about six months before laying her up, all but 3 where out side tolerance and one of the exhaust valves was completley closed. they where all adjusted and brought back into tolerance so they should be fine.
I checked the fuel pump and filter, carb bowls are filled loads of petrol.

Hmmm - bugger.
can you start the bike using carb cleaner ??? If it runs the same then it isn't fuel delivery.

Ok next favorite thing .... disconnect the exup. Take off the cover and inspect the cables for fraying see if the valve turns easily (on the pulley). If it starts and runs you'll hear the valve pop a bit but then see what the bike does.

I discovered what the problem was.
Evil suggested exup valve and mie had seized up, so \i got her loosened up pair of vice grips little bit of gentel abuse,free as a bird.
still no go
so i bought easy start and borrowed a garage battery booster from a guy I know.
Air box off plug her into the mains easy start down the carbs hit the starter button and whop the wall behind the bike was covered in a wash of sooty black water
The bike had been sitting with the end can off, and the rain must have filled the exup chamber with water.
but she is all cleared now and is going spot on.

Has any one got a right hand mirror for a 3EN2 evil

Really you need to get into the exup and check the bushes but for now it works

I don't have a wing mirror, but I do have a pair of Gix 750 mirrors which could be made to fit they're longer than the Yam ones so you'd be able to see behind you. Probably cheaper to get one off the Bay though
