FZR Basic servicing info

Hi, ive recently passed my test and got myself a restricted 3TJ and want to service it but im finding it really hard to find any info on them
I want to know what type of oil filter they have (spin on or element) how much oil they take and a recommended brand/type and what type of spark plugs they use! Also where could i get all these bits? Ive phoned 2 dealers but they were both clueless and couldnt help me atall, ive searched on here and couldnt find anything, any help would be much appreciated.
Also how easy is it to remove the restrictors?

Welcome to the forum 8-) :grin:

There are links to manuals in the top thread of the FZR General section ... I don't think there's a spcific 3TJ one but there's probably an SP (Sport Production) one there and for servicing they're the same.

They have a spin-on canister oil filter, and you should use SAE 10/40 motorcycle oil, there isn't really a specific brand as such but if you look around on the web you'll probably find a deal for 4litres with a filter - try Hein Greikle, or e-bay. The drain plug is on the side stand side of the sump, replace the copper washer.
Spark Plugs are NGK CR8E or CR8EIX for irridium .... I usually get mine from www.sparkplugs.co.uk
You'll also need a fuel filterand an air filter - they're standard Yamaha items try a Yam dealer or again e-bay I'm not sure if there are pattern parts or not.
Fitting the plugs is a pain and it's eaiser if you take the front mudgard and radiator off (the rad will scratch the mudgard), loosen the long pipe on the side stand side at the engine end to let the coolant out. Use 1l of coolant mixed with 2l of distilled water (for batteries or steam irons) when you raplace it then top up with distilled water. Run the engine for 2 minutes to get any trapped air out.

As you've just passed your test your on a restricted license so I can't tell you how to remove the restrictors. I'm not trying to be arsey about it but your still a bit green when it comes to riding and that's why the law is as it is. I don't necessarily agree with that law but I can't break it on the forum .... neither should other people.
When you have more experience you'll probably work it out for yourself, but if you remove them your insurance is invalid. Anyway that's the soapbox over with.

but then its the choice of taking off the tank and carbs, or taking off the rad...

Thats very helpful, thankyou! Exactly the info i needed.

Im 21 so i took the Direct Access test so i can ride any bike, i only bought a restricted one because it was going cheap! Im fairly mechanically minded so i was going to have a play anyway and see what happens, i know its a few washers that restrict the air/fuel flow just didnt want to get stuck in one evening if its a good days work!

It's fairly simple to take out the restriction...
Tank off, airbox off, carbs off, then the restriction washers should be between the carbs and the inlet rubbers. It wont take you long at all to take them out.

The halfords plug spanner is about as much use as men's tits for getting the plugs out from under the tank,
it's too short and fouls on the frame, the T piece on top is too wide and if your lucky you might get 1/8 of a turn and your very likely to cross the threads putting the new one's in as there's no feel to it, i did manage to get the plugs out eventually but i wasn't going to risk putting em back with that, so i ended up buying a extension wobble bar for my socket set and that was the very kiddie just enough angle,
then i read a thread about taking off the rad so i'll give that a try next time

If you can - get a vacum cleaner arround the plug holes before you start so you can get any small stones or muck out.

If the bike was set up with the restrictors in then you might want to have it rolling road tested to check the fuelling. It's a good excuse to clean the carbs too.

a simple job, but well worth the trouble, loads of road rubbish gets in between the cam covers and if you try putting the plugs back and catch some crap in the thread then it's gonna get expensive.

@ pearson* did you remove the tank and go in the top or remove the rad and go in the front ?

I think i'll try removing the rad next time, it's a good excuse to change the coolant at the same time, i really didn't get on with the halfords plug spanner from under the tank it's a lot easier with the wobble bars on a socket ratchet

I went in from the tank as i was fitting the restrictor kit anyway so the carbs were already off.
