Hay all
I have recently purchased a VFR400 nc30.
The other day I had the fairing off and was busy inspecting the motor.... I discovered that both the front left and right engine mounting had broken off
My question is:
Is this a common problem?
Is it some thing to be concerned about and if not can I continue to ride?
Any info will be greatly appreciated

Hi, its quite common. but also often an indication the bikes either been crashed into the back of something, or on its side with some force (most have in all fairness)
are both broken ?
fix is either to get the mounts welded back on carefully assuming they are still attached sort of, or change the head.

Yes both are broken
Ye it has been in a smash...how big of a smash?...I have no idea as the previous owner who is a friend of mine was unaware of it and but I found it out when I told the bike in for a dyno where the mechanic mentioned that the front shocks had been straightened.
None the less is it some thing I need to worry about....can I continue to ride the bike as the motor does seem secure?

they wouldn't put the engine mounts there if you didn't need them...
I'm guessing some of the other enginemounts will be over-stressed if there having to carry the load of the top two, so while it might feel secure it might not be safe

I was thinking the same thing and at the same time wondering how stupid they are by making engine mounts rigid with out allowance for expanding or vibration!

Going to be a huge mission to try find a block that is in good nik not to mention the maintenance of fitting a new one

the front engine mounts are only on the head.. it's not too difficult to change them over.
And theres nothing wrong with the front engine mounts providing you dont' crash it!
If it's been crashed at such a force the front forks have needed straightening as well as breaking the engine mounts it must have been a good old bump.

I'm sure it's not too diffecult to change them over but it's also the mission of finding a head in good condition...and being in South Africa and the bike a grey import this is not the easiest thing to do

You'll need to lap the valves in and swap your seals etc.
My race bike had been in a front end when I bought it as a road bike.. Had to swap the front head on that...not as big a ballache as you might think.
Postage of a head to Saffa might be pricy but as I have a spare head I can find out for you?
