charging problem

hey guys was at the track yesturday.
had the bike a trickle charge the past few days to be certain the battery should be fine, started fine for the first 2 sessions then nothing, you hit the starter and nothing no sound at all
.
clutch starts no problems so i continued and finished my track day.
after one session i ripped off the seat unit and the battery was only getting around 9 volts and when u rev it its a little higher but not like the 14v it should.....
i brought it home and chucked it on trickle again to make shore starters not goosed and it starts fine with a charged battery so does this sound like a alternator or regulator problem?
im hoping regulator problem as i brought the nc30 (1992 model race bike) about a month ago and i tested the battery while started at 5000rpm and it measuered a nice 14.3v :) :) so i would like to think the alternator wouldnt diminish so quickly.
my haynes describes ways to test these with a set of multimeters, is this a good way of checking whats fukd?
whats your thoughts fellas
cheers Tim
