What's the speed light all about?

Hi all.
Took my NC24 for MOT yesterday and it pass no worries. Did her up about 5 years ago and she's been stood in garage ever since so thought I'd better show it some love!
It's the first time I've riden the bike properly on the road. The motor is unbelievable, just revs forever! But whats the speed light all about? It didn't seem to effect performance by restricting the engine, the bike just kept pulling. So what's it for?
Thanks in advance,
Greg78.

To let you know you are speeding.

alot of pre 88 imports had them inc my old TZR250 1KT. it comes on at 55mph to let you know you are speeding simple as that. 55 was the limit in japan, it was deemed as needed for home market models at that time.
consider it a challenge to see if you can keep it on.

The first time that light came on with my first nc21 I thought it was the oil warning lamp. When the engine had not blown up and I had checked again that it had not run out of oil I thought it might be the charging lamp but I soon learned. After a while it became annoying so I took the bulb out.

It should come on at 80km/h.. this was the maximum permissable speed for a motorcycle in Japan at the time, the light was there to inform the rider that they were breaking the law.
It doesn't restrict the bike or do anything. It's triggered by a disc in the clock, similar to the NC30 disc. You can either remove the bulb, ignore it or remove the tab on the disk.
Mine is standard as it doesn't bother me, plus if it's on I know i'm doing over 50 :)
