GK73A....carbs problems...petrol everywhere!
Hi guys,
Right, i really need some help with this as i am pretty stumped now.
Took the tank off to gk73a, cleaned it out with proper chemicals, and relined it with petrol tank sealer/liner...all went fine so now thats OK!
However, whilst the petrol tank was off, i took the carbs out to clean them through as i figured they would be blocked up with all the crap from the tank - which they were!
A few hours later, the were apart nice and clean and ready to go back together. Put them back together exactly how they came apart, and checked everything and it all seemed fine!
Put the carbs, airbox and tank back on today...started it, and it started but not very well...
But then i noticed a crap load of petrol dripping out of the bottom of the bike - there was petrol everywhere - took the airbox off and the insides of the carbs were soaking, the butterfly valves were wet with petrol and it was dripped from the bottom of the carbs reall quite quickly - but from where im not sure. I took the float chambers off again to double check them and they seem ok - also checked the drain screws in them and they were fine too...
..so, any ideas anyone??

non seating float needles, float o-rings not seated, float heights disturbed and not shutting off, i would say check everything again look for any dirt remenants and see if there is anything that can cause fuel to flood them. easier to do than describe i'm afraid. let us know how you get on mate. check all the o-rings to make sure they aren't trapped to

Re: GK73A....carbs problems...petrol everywhere!
Ok, well, new o-ring bought, along with new gaskets for the float bowls. All good now no petrol pissing out everywhere!
However, the bike still didnt want to run right - so i tired fiddling with the pilot screws a little, but ended up putting them back to where they were - at 1.5 turns out as that seemed best. Although can anyone please confirm what the setting should be for the pilot screws on a 73a ???
I then took one of the spark plugs out just to see what was going on there....now alart from being a bit sooty it didnt look so bad...but then i looked further.
I noticed the code of it was C8HSA...now im pretty sure its meant to be the cr9ek in them...so i check the part catalouge and indeed it is! The C8HSA plugs are about 10mm shorter than the CR9EK's, so effectivly it was sparking in the wrong place!
Popped out and got a new set of plugs, put them in and put it all back together, hardly had a chance to press the starter button as it burst into life immediatly!
It did however die again shortly afterwards, but i think this is becuase the idle isnt set right yet, and the bike needs a good run and to be warmed up to temperature! However the battery was dead so its now on charge for a while!
So good news in all i think - but can someone please confirm if the pilot screw setting is 1.5 tunrs out on this bike, because when i took the carbs apart for cleaning they were set to 2.5 turns out! So not so sure...
Also does anyone know why the bike might have died after running for a short amount of time, im pretty sure its because the idle isnt quite right, but the bike didnt want to burst into life again after so im not so sure.....
Thanks all!

Had a quick look at the manual and I believe its 1 and 3/4 (bearing in mind the manual is in Japanese
pg 47). Would assume it would need balancing though if youve been playing about with it.

Ok, well she still does not want to run!
After a few attempts she sstarted up this evening, sounded fine, but then all of a sudden cut out! And then after that she didnt want to go at all, nothing, not a susage!
Any ideas now?

Re: GK73A....carbs problems...petrol everywhere!
Well, its all fixed now!
After spending yet another day umming and arring over it, i tried starting it without the airbox on...and wooosh - straight into life!
So i took a smell of the crank breather pipe, and all i could smell was petrol - so i drained the oil out, and lets just say it came out as petrol basicly, its the fastest i have ever seen cold oil drain from a sump, came out like water!!
So i drained it through and let it drain for a few hours, and then filled it back up with nice new clean petrol - idle screw back to 1.75 tunrs out, clean airbox back on and it runs like a dream now!
To put it lightly im fucking glad this thing is fixed now!

Haha!! Ooops, ive been working on bikes too much recently and all the words are getting jumbled! I did mean Oil!!
Well she runs, and when the bike goes it runs great! However its very hard to start, and seemed to only start when the air filter was removed and/or the airbox aswell....
..but last night it seemed it didnt want to start at all after a few runs, so its close, but i think its just fine tuning of the carbs needed now, ill take another look later on!

Did you change all the o-rings in the carbs?
