Hi all!
New to this forum and just looking for some advice.
Ive had an 3tj for about 6 years, its been off the road for the last 4 years as i binned it whilst getting a bit over excited in a tight corner.
Anyway im am currently trying to ressurect it. I am having to buy a new top fairing/nosecone, fairing/mirror mount bracket, and indicators. As its been off the road for so long, its gonna need a service to get it road worthy again. What things should i get done? or what things do you guys reccommend?
any help with this would be much appreciated
Thanks

Welcome to the forum ... your in the right place :)
Sorry to hear about your spill but on the better side your now a fully fledged biker ... we all fall off

Just so we know, what kind of maintenance have you done before ???
First remove the bodywork - be careful even though it maybe broken or scratched. The bad news is the top fairing, they're hard to find. However you could fit a pattern part from Skidmarx. If the top faing isn't badly broken you can meand it with a Plastex kit. The mirror stay and front subframe ... I think somebody had them on e-bay but there are also a couple of bikes being broken by forum members, you might save some money on the postage.
Right then lets start with the engine.
New plugs; fuel filter; oil; oil filter; sump plug washer; coolant (1litre of antifreeze and 3 litres of distilled water); a can of carb cleaner; and a new battery.
You'll need to clean the carbs, don't be put off it's not to difficult.
Change the oil, the filter and the sump washer ... the sump plug's on the left side of the bike, use a decorator's paint tray to catch the old oil. Put the plug back in with the new washer, tighten it and then change the oil filter.
Take the radiator hose off on the left side .... coolant will go everywhere so have a bucket ready !!! Undo the the top hose (on the other side) undo and take off the radiator.
Now you can get at the sparkly plugs - so change them - if you can get a vacumn cleaner to the bike, clean in there first. When you do them up again just do them up untill you feel them touch the bottom (ooer) then 1/4 turn
only.
Put you radiator back on do up the hoses .... check them. Mix the anti freeze 1 to 2 ... that's half a litre to one litre ... and pour it into the top of the rad ... add a little to the plastic bottle at the back of the bike.
Have a cuppa and a biccy. Tell us when you done this

Thanks for the reply and your comprehensive guide!
I am a maintenance engineer so most of this shouldnt be a problem, im no mechanic though so bare with me!
This isnt my first spill, its the second so i know how hard some of these bits are to come by, as ive had to replace them all once before.
Ive aquired the headlight mounting bracket, mirrors, indicators,fairing/mirror brace, new battery and a full set of plastics apart from the top fairing, to which ive had to order from skidmarx.
Ill get cracking with everything you have suggested. Ive got a bit of time to kill anyway as expected delivery of the top fairing is 2 to 3 weeks. I dont actually have a manual for this bike, so if you know what type of oil, amount of oil i should use that would be great.
Again thanks for the help

oil is 10/40 semi synth .... the amount is 2300ml ... it's on the clutch casing (like most bikes

)
There are sticky threads at the top of the General and Workshop forums one of them has links to downloadable manuals.
This isnt my first spill, its the second
So your a crasher then
Tell us what you think of the skidmarx fairing when you get it.

hey evilchicken, all that is done so im checking back for furthur instruction! still awaiting a new screen though but bike is pretty much together. am impressed with the skidmarx top fairing pretty much a perfect match, some of the holes needed drilling out a bit more but that was to be expected. i know im going to need two new tires aswell as i expect the old ones have flat spots now.
Anything else you can help me with would be great
Ta

one thing i forgot to ask was, ive had to put a new set of clocks on it, but these are 20000km furthur on than mine, is there an easy way to set them back? only thing i could think of is putting the wheel end of the cable into a drill and running it for days.
Cheers
