30 engine in rvf wont start advice much appreciated

Post by skinnydog0_0 »

Hi All,
Firstly as a newbie i am like a kid in a sweet shop with this site  , i have led a very sheltered life not knowing about this place, so much info and propper advice from fellow 400 riders, i have wasted years of my life!!!

Anyway, I have fitted a UK spec nc30 engine to my RVF after throwing a valve and mashing the piston/cylinder in the 35 engine.
I have swapped the pulse generator over and re jetted to allow for the slightly richer running and the micron end can.
I am running 35 carbs on 120 and 122 jets as per uk spec carb jets.
The bike turns over and after trying for a while i can smell a little petrol from the exhaust.
I have taken one spark plug out and tested it against the frame and no spark!
I have checked the pulse genny and seems to be within limits, along with the coils. i charged the battery so it was full power, but still no spark.
Can i test the spark plug to see if it has broken, i.e. resistance/other?
I have 2 CDI's and tried them both but still no spark. I know that 1 CDI is fine as it was running the other engine.
2 of the spark plugs are from the old engine, and were working in the other undamaged cylinders plus 2 others that i am not sure of, as i didn't have them from a running engine.
If 1 spark plug is faulty would this stop the others working?
Or,
Is there something else other than swapping the pulse genny over that i need to do to get the 30 engine working in the 35 bike?
Any advice thoughts much appreciated.

I have managed to get it sparking, dont know how, but changed the plug to another old one and it has starting sparking. now it will try to start, but never quite catch, then backfire, like shotgun backfire not popping.
Have down jettet to 110s and re-charged the battery, will try to get it going again

The RVF cdi does not match the nc30 pickups, you will need to use the rvf pickup.

Hi Hunter, Yes i have swapped the pick up genny for the rvf one, i have a feeling it might be the battery, it is quite old, and discharges very quickly when i turn it over. It will probably turn over for about 50 seconds then it really starts to struggle.
has anyone ever had this type of problem with a faulty battery?

Hello again,
I took your advice Data Racer, and got 4 new plugs, but still no joy
I charged the battery, had a reading of 13.4v and when i am turning it over it has a reading of 11.4v to 11.7v so i think that the battery is okay under load.
I have taken the carbs off again and cleaned the jets checked the float heights and all seems ok.
I tried to jump start the bike but still no joy. i took the plugs out and checked that they are sparking and seemed ok.
Is it possible that the starter motor is not running fast enough to start the engine?
is there something i am missing???

Cheers

If your battery is low it could be.

I hook a car battery upto my bike battery when i've cleaned the carbs out as getting the initial petrol can take a while.. (note crank for 5 / 10 seconds and leave motor to cool for at least a minute) its plenty easy to burn out a starter motor with a car battery attatched.

Your using an NC30 CDI or an NC35? I couldn't quite make it out.

You are running an RVF CDI and RVF pulse generator aren't you? Seems strange that you get sparks, fuel and probably air..

120 is too rich in jetting for 35 carbs unless you don't run an airbox etc..

Can you give us a basic what's what ref your pulse generator swap? timing is possibly out??
