Ignition and temperature gauge weirdness on NC30

I have this strange intermittent issue with my NC30 where it will start missing and the temperature gauge will start jumping around.

Some observations:
  • The worse it misses the higher the temperature reads.

If I turn on the lights or indicator while this is happening the temperature reading goes up (but I don't think the missing gets worse).

It happens even at idle, revving may clear it up, not sure if this always works.

It happens in gear and in neutral, side stand down and up.

Even when the temperature reading is very high, the fan does not kick in.

Once I turned the ignition on and had the temperature gauge go to maximum, with no response from the starter. Switched everything off and on and it started up.
I don't think it's the battery (recently replaced) or the regulator/rectifier (checked after the issue started).

Me looking at the wiring diagram for the bike is a bit like a three year old pretending to read a book, so I could do with some help :)

you have got a loose earth somewhere so go check them out! There are only a few of them o make sure they are cleaned up and have a good connection when tightened back up.

You'll sort it ;)

Oh yes,...welcome to the site :rocks:

+1 on the bad earth.

Thanks guys, I will check that out.

How many earth points am I looking for? Be good to know when I've found them all, but I can't find details in my manual.

I suppose I should look for one near the battery, I think I've seen one near the regulator/rectifier (might be just for the RR though), don't recall seeing anything on the right hand side of the bike... I guess I'm looking for one more on the left hand side?

Actually, pretending to understand the diagram again I see that there is a frame earth shared by the coolant gauge and ignition control unit, I think that would be the one I'm after.

I really do hope it is as simple as sorting out a earth contact...

Not the main earth... the one you mention.. your 'pretending' works... :) there is one! It's near the coils on the NC24.. it'll probably be somewhere similar on the NC30.. when it doesn't make contact though the temperature gauge goes 'hot' and the bike starts running like donkeys
