My RVF again

I now have another problem with this bike, intermitant charging, when the bike is ticking over at 1300 revs the bikes voltage at battery is around 12volts now if i increase the revs to only 1500 the battery goes to around 13.1v but over 1500 revs it drops down to 10v??

Sometimes its fine and charging normally but its becoming a pain to have to keep checking before every ride.

Had new r6 reg/rect last year ( have also a spare that i have tried), new coil and leads last year and carbs for another problem (which is now sorted )

The battery was new early last year and hold a good charge.

Any ideas??

many thanks

if you are sure that the reg/rec and battery are good then it will probably be the alternator. it was on mine (NC30) so fitted a shiney new one. no probs since (touch wood etc)

Is there any way of doing a simple test on the Alternator to check?

I've never heard of an alternator lowering voltage as revs go up... considering, in theory, its just metal being swung around metal.

Personally I would be checking to see whether you have a large resistance somewhere else.

the way to test the alternator is a resistance check.

Unplug it and meter the 3 wires against each other a+b, b+c, c+a- if you get resistance you can expect that the wiring is fried...lean the bike on a wall (or a friend) and whip off the genny cover, get an M20 *1.5 (i think) bolt and wind off the rotor and see what is going on in there...

This pic is great...so I'll post it again.

The cover (engine cover?) or the actual rotor?

You need an M20x1.5 (I think) bolt to screw into the gubbins and it prises it from the clutches of the magnetic pull..
