Speedo drive

Post by Andy_998 »

Hi its my first post on the forum so please go easy on me ;) lol Right basically I've had my vfr400 nc30 since may, about a week before I put her away for winter the speedo stopped workin. Over the winter I stripped the bike back a bit for some tlc valve clearences etc. When I was tryin to find the problem with the speedo I found that the plastic drive that goes on the sprocket was fubared it was rounded off and I also found that the front bolt holding the sprocket on was loose!!!!! That could have been messy! Anyway thinking that caused it to round off I put thread lock on the bolt an torques it up, an fitted a new drive. Finally finished the bike last Saturday took it for a ride, and everything was brilliant untill I had done about 70km an now the speedo has stopped working again, it's the plastic drive that has rounded off again, this time the bolt is still tight though! Any ideas? I was thinking that it could have bent the metal drive that goes into the plastic drive slightly when the bolt was loose? Or mabe a stiff speedo cable? Any ideas greatly apreciated cos I like to know what speed I'm goin especially with all the speed cameras round my way!!! Lol

the chances are its the speedo cable, could be the drive that bolts to the cover but im sure if you clean that bit and wang a bit of WD40 in there get things loose that would be fine, my money is on a stiff cable,i replaced mine twice and then got a new cable been fine since, the little white plastic things are crummy and dont take much to kill um, theres someone on here does alloy ones , but if the cable is good and the drive bits free and workin then you should be fine with the standard plastic one

if you find you speed ocable is knackered, i have just bought a box of nc30 bits and there is a speedo cable in there. is used but looks good, doesnt seem stiff or stuck. no good to me as i need a longer cable for my '30.

if you need one pm me say £6.50 posted?

thats no prob, i was guessing the postage at around £2.00 and that can be the killer sometimes.

Over-tight / no grease / stiff speedo (siezed)

If it's rounding off it's not together right or something has siezed stiff (usual problem)
