nc24 fuel tap filter question - i can't get it out!!!

Hi guys i'm new to this site so a big 'hello'. Im at a point of sheer frustration with an NC24 i've brought and renovated. I won't bore you with all the issues but i have s[pent time and money to discover the root of my problem is water in the tank (tank has been layed up for some time (2 years). My current problems are these - the tap doesn't work when i suck on the vacuum pipe. There's obviously something wrong with it and i'm thinking of converting to HRC. That aside the tank has rust in the bottom as well as a drop of fuel/ water I cannot get out despite trying. However, my real frustration is 'how do i get the fuel tap filter out of the tank?' the tap is out (with the brass pipe) but the the filter still in the tank! I can pull it out a couple of inches but no more. My reasoning for wanting to get it out is to try and get the thimble full of water/ fuel out (i presume this is water that wont go through the filter?). I also want it out as i'm going to put one of those chemical solutions in the tank that hardens and prevents sludge/ rust clogging. Obvioulsy if i dont get the filter out before using it then nothing at all will go through the filter.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Pull it.

It's only plastic try squeezing it together with your fingers but dont' break it. It will come out.

You could flush the petrol tank out with loads of parrafin to get the water out, the last bit of parrafin will mix with the petrol and eventually work its way through the system.

Adding 300ml of meths to a full tank will help to remove the water as it mixes with the meths and pulls it through the system.

If it's empty stuff a rag into the tank and shake it about, it should pick up the last bits of water etc.

Thanks, it's out. I tried pulling it out but no go. Gave it a pinch and pushed it in. A bit of wobbling the tank back and forth and it was within sight. Grabbed it with my spring gizmo. Result!

Now off to get some tank sealer. my very small amount of liquid has gone over night - i suspect it wasn't water but fuel and has evaporated.

Never heard of those 2 methods before but they would be a handy way of clearing water from a tank.
