3EN1 frame, 4JH everything else.

Post by Tristan »

Due to yesterdays court appearence I've found myself with some time on my hands. I've decided a bit of TLC for my 95 foxeye FZR600R is in order, so I'd decided on a frame down strip, clean and sort. Anyway the thought of a nice alloy frame was tempting so I looked into it, seems generally viable, and there is a 3TJ frame on ebay, which I gather is the popular choice. Anyway went to the local breaker to see if he had one but all he had was a pair of 3EN1s. However one has quite a few bits on it, and he offered me a very tempting price. So I ask, would the swop into the older frame be doable with the newer engine, or will it be more hassle than it's worth, evem for the very low price.

Googling around shows quite a few YZF600R engines in the frames with lower spars, however the lower spar frame has no provisions for the top mounts, is this because the top mounts are only there so the engine can be used as a stressed member? And therefore not needed with the spars, or are these conversions just negligent (or feature some kind of top mounts which I cant see)
Examples of what I meant:

If you had a 3en1 and wanted to put a 600 engine in it ... that would be woth it. But for you with a Foxeye already I don't think it would be. You'd loose weight from the frame but you'need to mod your swingarm to fit the frame, yours will be a bit to wide and I think the bearings will need sleeving down (See Kala's thread using a 3en1 and TRXxx rear end). I couldn't say if your bodywork would fit, from seeing pics of the rear subframe on e-bay I'd say it would need work ... same with the fuel tank and air box.
The good news would be the front end dropping striaght in and the 4JH engine still has the mount holes on the bottm of the crank cases for the frame rails.

Because your bike is still fully functioning - it hasnt suddenly got worse - I'd still look for a 3TJ. If your modding your bike then you need best value but don't want to be left thinking what if. You'll need Frame, forks, bars, rear end ... probably body work (inc) fuel tank and headlight. What you want is a bike with blown engine build the two together and sell the spares.

Alternatively you could look to improve your bike - An R6 shock (with different spring) could be done for about £100 and then add another £50 for a suspension set up, that will make it feel a better bike all round. Brakes - blue / gold spot calipers should bolt straight on, HH pads, and braided hoses. Add in a radial master cylinder and you'll stop well too.
If you have time on your hands and an electric drill get yourself a tube of G3 or G4 cutting paste for the paintwork. Wash and degreease the bodywork, then take it off the bike. Wet the paint work and rubb the compound on a wet rag into the paint work (don't let it dry) then buff with a wet lambswool mop on a slow drill speed then wash off the residue with more water. This is a once in 5-10 year thing to do but your paint will shine after.

Cheers, very informative post. One of your points is probably the most relevant, and something I did consider myself "I'd still look for a 3TJ. If your modding your bike then you need best value but don't want to be left thinking what if." Basically even if The 3EN frame is doable, I would be left with niggly annoying bits that I wouldnt have if I use the 3TJ hmm

A bit more background, the 4JH has no fairings, and currently looks like this:
http://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=175367&" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The bike in the breakers does have a fair few bits I could consider using, sorry for the slightly wrong title. The fuel tank and cover are repairable, and the airbox is there too (fuel pump a possible issue though) as for swingarm, I could use the 3EN item, though there isn't much clearence for a wider tyre, plus I believe it's an 18" rear, which isn't ideal.

As you say, I could leave my foxeye as is and improve it, but since I have the time on my hands I fancy a full stripdown and something a little alternative as the end result. Anyway as this 3EN is so cheap I think I may well buy it, to break, and experiment with the frame and stuff. One big concern really is the fact that theres only 2 mount points not the 3 like the 3TJ and the 4JH.

Cheers for the post, I'll be keeping this updated whichever way I decide to go
