Raising rear ride height

I can get hold of a NC30 rear shock recently rebuilt but before getting my hands dirty I want to know how to go about raising the rear of the bike a little.
Is the easiest way to get a spacer and put it under the shock linkage or to get some kind of spacer that is put between the spring (got to pry the spring apart a bit) and the bottom of the shock increasing preload so to speak? Does anyone know the rough dimensions of a would be spacer? I'm quite a newbie to this and haven't taken a look at the linkages and stuff yet so just asking in advance.

An RVF shock linkage arm (the very bottom bit like a fork not the knuckle) will raise the rear by around 20-30mm

The easiest way on the vfr is to drill the shock linkage to make it shorter:

Agreed. Just don't go any further than 12 mm centre to centre or you'll have clearance issues. Works a treat.

That's great, thanks guys. Does anyone have a picture of the mod done and what the rear end looks like?
So from the original hole's center, I shouldn't go more than 12mm to the new holes center, is that right? I guess if i over shoot it and get clearance issues anyhow I could just put the preload ring down a bit? I think i will do this first thing tomorrow but just want to confirm that if I keep using my 18 inch wheel and go 10mm- 12mm shorter... it's not going to end up too high is it?
You don't have to weld the old hole up right? I don't have a welder so hope it's not critical eh.
Also- how far can i drop the forks up through the clamps? Will the wheel hit the radiator if they bottom out and the forks are dropped through a bit?

Rick Oliver recommends 8mm centre to centre in the thread link, I would go with what that man says! At 8mm you will have to fill/weld the original hole over. A garage could probably do this for next to no cost.
12mm will be too high. The exhaust will hit the linkages.

I don't get it though... on that picture the hole has been drilled in a different place to this one...
