NC24 - No spark?
Hiya, First post here.
Cannot get the the NC24 to start. I bought the bike off ebay
, the guy said it had been standing "a while". After much messing about I have discovered there is no spark coming from the plugs. So far I've done this for the 2 easy to reach cylinders:
tested coil terminals for continuity
cleaned all the earths
2 new spark plugs
WD40 in kill switch
But still nothing showing or doing.
HT leads - I cannot get a resistance reading for either of the two which I have tried. Is it feasible that all the leads are duff? seems unlikely right?, but why then cant I can any reading on the two which I have removed?
Any help? I'm totally stumped here!

Re: NC24 - No spark?
Hmm. No spark at all.. not seen that one for a while.
The Oki ignition box could be knackered / playing up.
It lives under the rear seat.. if you take the right hand (when sitting on the bike) rear panel off you'll see 3 brown plugs by the rear brake fluid resevoir.. one is for the rear light.. the other two are for the Oki box, unplug them and spray some WD40 in the connectors.
These bikes will crank even when the killswitch is on so you might want to take the switch apart or use your multimeter to make sure it's not on.
You should get continuity for the leads... your meters probably going out of range tho.. dont have it set to 200, set it to 2000k (other end of the scale) as the resistance will be about 20k ohms, so setting it to 200 will just make the meter say 1 as its out of range.
Your coil resistance is fine (2-4 ohms)
It's not likely to be leads / coils.
Try lead again with your meter set to 2000k and see what you get
My moneys on Ignition box connections / bad plugs / bad earth.
Get back to me after you've tested this.

Re: NC24 - No spark?
Interesting, thanks for that :)
I was starting to feel like the CDI unit was the only thing left to try. Plugs are new so should be fine. HT leads, just tried all scales on the multimeter, still nothing?

Your black lead on the picture looks a little low to reach the end of the cap where the plug makes contact.Christoph wrote:Interesting, thanks for that :)

Either use a piece of wire stuck in there or try putting the sparkplug back in and measureing the resitance from the electrode of the plug / other end.
I can't really see all of the plug leads just going.

Re: NC24 - No spark?
Yes I did try getting continuity with the spark plug attached, still nothing. If I wanted to replace the HT leads, where is the best place to go?
I have now removed the CDI unit. Looks a little tatty but no obvious defects. Obviously its a sealed unit, is there any repairs or checks or tricks I can do with it before buying a new one?
Thanks :)

Don't just buy a new one, you don't even know if it's broken yet! You'll end up with lots of parts.
Have you tried getting continuity on the other two plugs leads yet? / Tested them for a spark?
Having all 4 plug leads faulty is very unlikely
Check the earth on the front coils is ok too, you'll have problems if it's loose.

I havn't tried the other two yet but I suspect they are also non sparkers as the bike doesnt sound like it even wants to start at all.Neosophist wrote:Don't just buy a new one, you don't even know if it's broken yet! You'll end up with lots of parts.

All plug leads being dead does seem unlikely which makes me think it must be a single problem affecting ALL plugs, i.e. CDI unit or earthing. Seeing as I've cleaned and checked the earths, that leaves just the CDI.
Still, no continuity from the HT leads seems like they are shouting to be replaced, regardless of how unlikely it is, right?
Kinda feels like I'm at the stage where I have to buy a working part to eliminate the unknowns. I just asked the Honda dealer for a price on HT leads, they are "discontinued, but would have been £30 each". lol £120 for HT leads :D
Looks like ebay again.

Re: NC24 - No spark?
I havn't checked the front coils but I'm guessing as there is no spark from all 4 plugs, it's not an isolated issue. Have now ordered a used CDI off ebay. No doubt it'll change absolutly nothing and I'll be heading down the garage come pay dayVfRTeddy wrote:have you checked the front coil earth cause i had this prob aswel an just had to re-earth it
